As a seller, I prefer BIN listings, but buyers prefer auctions. So for items like common-date coins which I expect to sell for $20 or $25 I run auctions.
The problem: many auctions fail to attract much attention. Hence I pay up for promotions. The problem: eBay is now demanding $2.99, $3.49 or $3.99 up front for these auctions (depending upon duration) and for a $20 coin that is as much as 20% on top of the ~12% they're taking already.
For Promoted Listings Standard (for BIN listings) the minimum is now 2% but at least that's only payable when your item sells. The PLE fee is a sunk cost, and the % is sort of infinite if you don't sell.

AND for those that don't know, you can change what you see via the active listings link and then the "customize table" option, so that you can, at a glance, know which items you have promoted and not.
I'd suggest if you're running a bunch of auctions promoting one of them. Many eBay users come upon your promoted listing and check your other auctions.

Yeah, I never promote more than half of them, but it does seem like a lot of people don't hang around to see what else I have. So I keep getting snookered into paying up.
Ah PLE, we hardly knew ye. Ebay finally figured out that it was a great deal for sellers who are running high-dollar auctions to pay a fixed 2.99 or 3.49 and get exposure for a relative song. Anyway it's all over now and percentages (PLS) are the only game going forward whether auction or BIN. Along with PLA for the adventurous.
Gotta love the marketing babble: "We heard you!" As though sellers were clamoring to have PLE deleted from the arsenal.
