Geoff Wilson from Sports Card Investors just paid 100k for Jordan #101 PSA 8 at the National. That sets the market to some extent.

I have a GAI 8 Star 101 Jordan I would like to crossover. I’m thinking of putting the minimum grade of 8 as my choice. Would the $1000 submission for $24,999 and below be appropriate? I value my card around that based on BGS 8 prices. I wonder if they would upcharge if I get an 8 to the $100,000 and below level which is $3,000 due to this recent sale. My centering is approximately 62-38 and I’m seeing that 70-30 is acceptable for PSA 8. I hate to think of throwing away $1000 plus insurance if it doesn’t meet the minimum grade though.

I could be way off base, but I don't see the 101 MJ as $100K card. I can see it in the $35-$50K range, but good God $100K. I know the 101 will be a very low POP in high grade and this being MJ's truly 1st card will drive up the dollars. I also think there is some overhype with PSA now grading Star. Like I said I could be way off base.

I guess my next question is how will this affect the 86 Fleer #57 in the long run? 86 is a better photo of MJ, but now will this be considered his 2nd year card? A lot of collectors consider the 86 Fleer has their white whale or dream card, but does the Star 101-take precedence now? I have owned both, but I did sell my BGS 8 101 years ago, because I wanted all my cards in PSA holders, but still happy to own an 86 Fleer.

Not seeing the card in hand or even a picture of course, I would assume that the GAI 8 would probably cross to a PSA 6 and I would submit it with that value and that minimum grade and hope for a better result on a good day. If you submit with an 8 minimum I would expect that you will be throwing away $1000 and get your card back in your GAI holder.

I did watch the sports card investor video and saw the sale at 100 K. Whether he paid a good price or not, I think this will certainly raise the price of this card and whatever price it settles in it I just see these PSA 1984 Star 101s selling for higher prices while the 86 Fleer market tries to hold its value.

I agree the 86 Fleer Jordan is better looking than the 101 and Gatorade cards, but it’s not as good as either of the Star Jordan Slam Dunk or Court Kings cards. So shortly the 86 Fleer will be the 3rd best looking 3rd year Jordan card that PSA will grade. I know what I’d be doing with my purchases. 🤔

It would be waste of money unless you submit it raw IMO. It's hard to evaluate a card that is already in a holder, and at $100K this card is going to get three sets of eyeballs plus digital scan.

How were Star Basketball cards distributed…wax packs, cello packs, rack packs, vending boxes?

  • There is no way that card is worth $100000 in 8

Team sets in sealed bags from authorized dealers. If you scroll halfway down page one of this thread there's a few teams bags starting with Larry Bird. They also had numerous different subsets that were available as a sealed bag as well with some using 5"x7" cards.

It will definitely get a 7 and I think there is a 50-50 chance at an 8. GAI was a very reputable grading company for Star basketball. Card Ladder has the GAI 8 valued at $28038 and BGS 8 valued at 24,653 which says a lot. I talked to Steve Taft before buying the card and he remembered grading it. GAI and the red SCD labels are solid for this issue.

I agree. This should not be a $100k card now. But I can see it being one later. If I were lucky enough to sell for even $70k I would try to buy as many BGS 8 copies as I could for that amount. Centering is the key. Look at the inconsistent centering grades given by Beckett on this card. Taft is the expert and he said if you find one centered it’s a fake. As an old time collector I always thought the Star 101 was the grail card over the 86 Fleer.

  • I have a complete set of 84 Star in bags. The Chicago bag has 101 right on the top. It’s centering is 40-60 L to R which seems like most of the graded ones in the pics look to be. I’m torn, maybe I’ll just leave it in the bag for awhile to see how this pans out.

Leave it in the bag. I think PSA will grade bags eventually and that one will be very hot.

  • You may be right

Looks like the first Jordan '84 Star #101 PSA 9 just hit the Pop report. Hopefully the owner shares pic of it somewhere.

edit: Its a great looking card, someone on BO mentioned it was a BGS 8.5 previously.

The bottom right corner is very soft and there is a vertical line on the surface coming from the elbow of the background player. PSA 7 at best if I submitted it...

  • I been looking at this as a investment type card. Holding for just a bit or should i hold longer 2+yrs
Thoughts anyone??? What kind of prices we expect by grades?? I seen so many 20-50k ranges on Ebay.

This would be a hold card, an anchor! You would only sell it to buy a Hellcat >:)

Sir Mine is a PSA 6
I just skiddish, if the market gets flooded with all thos 8-8.5's Becketts turning into 7s or higher and lessens mine.
I was thinking of maybe using Goldin and see what transpires.
As of now, i am seeing figures for this in the 20-23K range (those few that did sell)
Explain as to why holding? as i am not expertised in this field.

Are they grading all of them ie all the different STAR sets/issues?? The reason i ask is because Memory Lane had an 86 Best of the New PSA 9 Jordan in its auction that ended yesterday and its the only one in the pop report in any grade--and it states in the pop report "No Longer Grading"--is that an old note from when they werent grading any STAR cards or did they decide to stop grading this particular issue after grading just one Jordan??

That is most likely one of the previously graded Star cards before they stopped grading them entirely. IIRC they're currently only grading cards from the 1984-85 set alone and none of the subsets.

I decided to sell-list my over on Net54, if anyone takes a look in the BST section (everything else/non-sports)
