Two Live Balls in Play, June 30, 1959 Cards vs Cubs-Musial & Banks
63 years ago, Ball Four to Stan Musial that travelled to the back wall at Wrigley Field, started a sequence of events that resulted in 2 "live" balls being put into play. It involved two of the most iconic future Hall of Famers, the Cubs Bat Boy, a protested game, and another Cubs loss.
Below is the Chicago Tribune article describing the events and how the Cubs Bat Boy was critical in retiring Stan Musial on a walk:
Had the Bat Boy not gone out and retrieved the original ball, third baseman, Al Dark would have never been able to pickup the ball in time to throw it to Ernie Banks and put the tag Stan Musial on his way to third base.
The next day, the Bat Boy, Bob Schoenfeldt, upon entering the Cubs clubhouse, was intercepted by one of the Cubs coaches and was told that Mr. Wrigley wanted to see him up in his office. On their way up the walkway to Mr. Wrigley's office, Bob was understandably upset thinking he was in trouble and that Mr. Wrigley was going to fire him. However, when he went into Wrigley's office, he was met by the Cubs manager, Ernie Banks and some of the other Cubs players. Mr. Wrigley just wanted to thank him because he was one of the few Cubs that actually got Musial Out that day.
This is known as “bad luck.”

my only other question is if Richard Kirk III ever showed up.
