Swiss canton of Chur, pfennig, uniface and undated, struck in the late 1600s.
Prior to the adoption of the Constitution of 1848 (and with the exception of the Helvetian Republic, a Napoleonic puppet state), "Switzerland" wasn't really a single country; it was nominally a collective of independent republics, principalities and bishoprics, bound together by mutual defense treaties but each canton (state) having its own currency.
The coat of arms on the coin is an ibex, the badge of the League of God's House, a sub-federation of which Chur was the capital city.
Waste no more time arguing what a good man should be. Be one. Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius, "Meditations"
