Newcomb and Clapp's Attribution Book on Large Cents...

There have been a number of threads on Large Cent attribution recently so I finally broke down and bought a couple of books (Newcomb's US Copper 1816-1857; and Grellman's book on Late Dates). I had been trying to attribute from images on Coinfacts and could usually narrow it down to a couple of prospects, but then would get bogged down in some of the finer details.

Now that I have the actual book in hand, where to begin?! The font on the printing I have makes it a bit difficult to read, but that issue aside... Are the Numbers along the left margin of the tables the actual Newcomb number, and are those numbers consistent between Obverse and Reverse? For instance... for an 1839 LC, does a No. 14 obverse mate up with a No. 14 reverse... etc? Also, what is an "A" number? It seems to be consistent with the "N" number, but not all varieties seem to have them.

As always, any assistance is greatly appreciated.

A = Numbers assigned by Frank Andrews, who produced an attribution guide before Newcomb. They're used in Newcomb as a cross-reference.

I use the William Noyes book for middle dates.
