Decisions...Decisions...What To Do ??

FairlanemanFairlaneman Posts: 10,424 ✭✭✭✭✭
Have this Dime and I just can't figure Out What to do with It. Maybe send it to PCGS and Get a Possible MS65 Grade but more Likely a MS64. Another Option would Send to NGC and Get the 65 for sure or Maybe 66. Then the Real Thing Would Be to send it to ACG and get the MS67 Grade.
Darn !! Decisions, Decisions. NEED ADVICE PLEASE.image

Why not keep it raw and forever enjoy the thrill of wondering exactly what it would grade?

          Ken,

Keep it as a raw coin. A 65, even in FB, isn't worth the cost of slabbing, unless you picked it up dirt cheap. Not every coin needs to be slabbed to be enjoyed. Besides, raw coins take up a lot less space.

          Don,

No, I hadn't seen that set. 15 coins tied for finest known - not too shabby! He just needs to get rid of that lowly '18/17-S that's just an XF40. They're one of my favorite coins, and I think they're undervalued. I haven't added to my set in a while; didn't see any SLQ's I needed at a show last weekend. Maybe it's just as well, the Merc's are doing a good job of draining my wallet. image

I have to take the no slab stance also.

It sure has some pretty colors and it does have nice appeal however the cost to have it slabbed is too great a percentage of the coins value. Therefore, the next question what is your intention with the coin? If it is for sale you will not likely receive more (net) after it is slabbed with the cost of slabbing. 64/65 NB?

If you are just trying to preserve the toning for your own benefit and don't have intentions to sell the coin, how about gluing an airtite holder shut to add insurance that it is likely airtite and keeps the toning in a motionless state.

              TC,

Good point. I have hundreds of raw coins that I keep in Kointains and 2x2 snaplock holders. A lot of them are older Lincolns that have been in their capsules for 20-30 years, and they look as good today as when they were sealed. Someday, when I'm ready to sell, the better coins will be slabbed, just to make them more marketable, but in the meantime, these holders do a great job of preserving them.

For those not familiar with them, Kointains are round 2-piece inert plastic holders that fit so snugly around a coin that you can hardly tell they're there. They're great for coins that perhaps aren't worth slabbing, or that you simply don't want to have slabbed.

The 1888 cent is in a Kointain; the 1909 is in one of the 2x2's. Both provide excellent protection.

Edited because I forgot to add the attachments. Duh!

If I use the Other Storage Methods then I have to have Another Box. Granted Its Cheaper to Use them and they Protect just as well but Heck when Your Half Senile its Hard to Remember where Stuff is.

                  Ken,

How about keeping it in an Intercept Shield holder and as other has said..keep it raw. I would love to see the toning in person. You might want to start a toned 40s set and see if you can match this coin. It would be an inexpensive way to put together another beatiful set.
