Found a price list in coin denominations

A rifle cost 11 pesos. How many Reales is that?

You are correct; the monetary system was reckoned at 8 reales to the peso. The currency here is quoted in pesos and reales, with 1 real being treated as the 1/8th subsidiary unit, You'll notice that none of the "reales" amounts are higher than 7. Thus, "8 pesos 6 reales" is 8 and 6/8ths pesos, or in decimal notation, 8.75 pesos. Or, reckoned in reales, that would be 70 reales. "11 pesos" converted into reales would be 11x8 = 88 reales.

We would say "Maximilian introduced decimal currency to Mexico", but yes. The "peso" remained the basis of the currency, now officially named the "peso" on the coins themselves, but was now divided into hundredths, rather than eighths.

Maximilian was French. I wonder what the Confederates were going to pay old Max with?
