I also got this stuff back.

In 1992 I really liked these. Looking at it now, the set kinda sucks. 1992 and they're still selling Frank Thomas as a Rookie. The Ivan Rodriguez Rookie Sensation is a little more legit. He had a 1991 Topps Update card, I guess. This one is missing the foil layer. I don't know if that's cool or not.

Min size. I've put it next to a few random 1974 topps cards. It is a little small.

So, I sent in 5 of these Hawks. They graded 2, 6s. And, 3 got min size. They are a little small. Hawk is at the bottom of the page. I was a little disappointed at my average. I could do better now.

I Thirst for Skateboarding is a Stacy Peralta rookie card. For some reason they grade the sticker side as the front. The athlete is on the back. I think that's a lot of 6s. This set is real tough in high grade. I sent 2 in to Becket, through a shop, before I made this PSA sub. One got a 6.5 and the other got an 8.

Not sure I understand all your notes such as "I just didn't notice."

But very cool. Quite a bit of cards and some neat obscure stuff!

Notes sometimes follow from the previous line.

I've heard rumors of PSA damaging corners, but nothing regarding creasing and I don't understand how that would be possible (accidentally; it could be possible on purpose).

The Tony Hawk situation is beyond a frustrating point if it is within accepted tolerance variance of all the graded SIFK Hawk ones. If a card is known to have a smaller size than others in the set due to manufacturing process, then that card should be graded without bias against its size dimensions. The most important illustration of this point is the notorious 1968 O-Pee-Chee baseball "shorties" that most often get sent back as minsize even though none of the bunch were manufactured with the same size cut as the majority of the set. PSA absolutely gets it wrong when it comes to the '68 OPC shorties, and it looks like the same might be happening with Hawk though I'd need to look further into it to be sure.

I just got my grades for a small order and 6 of the SIFK cards from the same set as the Tony Hawk cards above came back as MinSize...I don't get it

Here's the Randy Johnson. It's really hard to see the crease in the holder. I'm going to try to get a pic of it with a camera. I doubt I'll be able to though.

  • CardGeekCardGeek Posts: 486 ✭✭✭

    I guess I can.

    Here's the Henderson

The crease is real tough to see in the holder. Real tough to get a picture of too.

I'm surprised the Henderson graded higher than the Johnson.

I sent this one in just to see what it would get.

It has a fingernail mark, or something, at the top. Looks like that makes it a 4. Obviously it has other issues too.

I dig the skate cards! Working on building up a skate/bmx set myself. I have an unopened box of Generation Xtreme cards along with with a box of Fleer Adrenaline. Waiting for a good night to rip those.

There's a pretty cool Donruss BMX set from 1984. I don't know anything about BMX. I liked the bikes when I was a kid though. I thought about doing BMX when once I ran out of interesting skateboarding stuff to go after. Not really my thing though. A good amount of BMX cards came out of Australia too. Weet-Bix I think. Or similar. I'd really like a guide to Australian cards.

I've had this card since I was a kid. Of course back then I thought errors were bad on cards. Of course, now that I am older I know that's not true, but the opposite. This Bo Jackson 90 Donruss BC-1 has the print defect of a huge white dot on his face. It looks like one of the dots off his collar tried to escape. lol

I scanned the card at 1200 dpi so you can zoom in to see that the dot was actually printed on the card and not something that got on the card after I owned it. Being scanned at such a high dpi makes the colors look lighter than they are. The actual card looks like any other card like this. Except for the dot. of course, I'm sure they're quite a few of these cards out there. But I bet this is the only one like this. There is wear on the edges from me handling it as a kid. Like most kids back then I was a big Bo Jackson fan so I would pull it out with all my other Bo Jackson cards from time to time. The edges are not as noticeable in person.

I don't know if I want to sell. But I did want other collectors to see and share their input.

See though, this is a print defect. An error would be, like, if they spelled his name wrong.

If you make stuff like that something special, people just start making cards with errors and print defects and hyping them.

Back in the 90s, when I first heard of the Frank Thomas NNOF. I believe the story was that the guy who owned Beckett owned all of the known copies. He also owned the price guide. Suddenly that card was real expensive. I could be misremembering. It's not like I keep a journal on this stuff. I shouldn't be that far off though.

  • Thank you very much. If that dude really did that with the Frank Thomas card, that's messed up. Kind of clever, but ethically not the best move.

Rough on those Tony Hawk's. The min size one on the left looks nicely centered too.

looks like it also has wax on the surface. with one or the other it is probably a 5 or 5.5 but with both a 4.

those creases , at least the one on the Rickey are pretty common and rather disappointing when the rest of the card is nice(although in this case the bottom left corner was going to hurt)

this sub seems all over the place, what was your expectations when you sent it in? I assume that was a long time ago in a galaxy far far away ...........

  • CardGeekCardGeek Posts: 486 ✭✭✭

My expectation was that I would get this stuff back in a reasonable amount of time. I'm not even upset about the grades. I just expect them to be accurate. If the turnaround happened in a reasonable amount of time I'd just submit some more and not even worry about this stuff. I paid 10 dollars a card, I think, I scraped this together just to hit 100 cards. I have a box of stuff that I had expected to be able to submit. But, not at 30 bucks a card and 1.5 year turnaround no guarantees.

The Manny Ramirez though. When I submitted it, a thousand dollar plus card on eBay, in a 10. Much less in any condition other than a 10. I took it out of the pack and put it in with the rest of my stuff. When I got this stuff back the Ramirez was a around 100 dollar card in a 10 on eBay.

If I were submitting anything of real value I would be very cautious. Especially if there are offers being thrown around. High res scans and detailed photos of everything being sent in.

In some areas on eBay I can set the market. I'm just 1 dude. I don't even have a ton of cash or anything. But, I can control the markets. If I were 4, 5 or 10 dudes with some cash...

I don't believe PSA should be accepting anything that isn't at least 5 years old. When the community thinks multi million dollar cards are coming out of 2022 packs, how can I blame them?
