Big Red Machine Set? Help me weight it

Gentlemen,

I am going to send BJ @ PSA a request to add a Big Red Machine set. Within the set would be the rookie cards of each of the 8 positional players and some of the pitching staff. Should Sparky Anderson be included? I grew up watching the Reds of the 70's (lucky me) and while I can easily remember the positional players, I cannot remember the pitchers. I have a roster from 1975, the year they won the World Series and recognize some names but I need your help with a few things.

In addition to the following definates who should be included in the Big Red Machine Set and what is there rookie card? Also, I would need help in weighting the set according to the customary weights assigned other sets on the Registry.

Here is what the set would look like:

C- Johnny Bench 1968 Topps #247
1B- Tony Perez 1965 Topps #581
2B- Joe Morgan 1965 Topps #16
SS- Dave Concepcion 1971 Topps #14
3B- Pete Rose 1963 Topps #537
LF- George Foster 1971 Topps #276
CF- Cesar Geronimo 1971 Topps #447 can someone confirm this?
RF-Ken Griffey 1974 Topps #598

I would like to add 5 Starting Pitchers and 1 closer. I have listed their rookie season can you provide there rookie card info.

SP Jack Billingham 1968
SP Gary Nolan 1967
SP Fred Norman 1962
SP Don Gullet 1970
SP Pat Darcy 1974

Closer?
Rawly Eastwick 1974

So the set would be approx 14 rookie (could be more after your feedback) card of the Big Red Machine.

Would you include Sparky Anderson in the set? Do you think of him when you think of the Big Red Machine?

I would love to hear your comments on my idea.

Jeremy

missing - I would suggest instead asking for a 1975 or 1976 Reds team set to be put on the registry, in the same fashion as other legendary teams ('68 Tigers, '63 Dodgers, etc.) have been put up. The cross-set nature of what you propose may make it likely that only one person will be maing a serious effort at completing it.
BTW, I consider Anderson an integral part of the Big Red Machine.

  • As a boy growing up in Ohio during that time period, I would say yes, Sparky is definitely necessary in the set registry, but I agree with NickM that you would probably have better luck getting a 75 or 76 reds team set listed. Then you would also get the minor players who played big roles like Clay Carroll (reliever/closer) and Ed Armbrister (big bunt/interference?) and even youngster Dan Driessen
Looking for unopened 77 topps bb and any vintage Mays, Clemente, Aaron
