I was following only seven Indian Head Cents in tonight's Heritage auction, and while I was the high bidder on each of the four lots I bid on, I was also watching three other lots a friend of mine wanted who unlike me, he "swims in the deep end of the pool"

The first of those three lots was an 1866 MS66RD, PCGS w/CAC. The PCGS Price Guide has it at $15,500. It went for $37,200 all in.

The next coin was an 1873 Closed 3, also MS66RD, PCGS w/CAC. The PCGS Price Guide has that at $21,000. It went for $45,600 all in.

The final coin my friend wanted was an 1888, also MS66RD, PCGS w/CAC. The PCGS Price Guide has that at $10,000. It went for $30,000 all in.

So for those three coins, the PCGS Price Guide totals $46,500. The high bidder(s) paid a total of $112,800. WOW!

I'm waiting to hear from my friend to find out if he was the high bidder on one or more of those three coins

Those were some very strong prices realized. I had many of them on my watch list but as usual forgot to tune in at auction time. Too bad Heritage doesn't send out auction reminders in email like GreatCollections does.

You can set up your Heritage account to email you reminders or even text you reminders. You can even do it for individual lots.

People should send their tax deductible donations directly to the Church of Russell.

True. However, Heritage has the best auction tool in the industry that I find is invaluable. It allows you to easily place your max hammer bid about one full week before the lot goes on the block, but doesn’t get “activated” by the computers until the moment the coin actually goes on the block. This way, if you forget, or get tied up for ANY reason, like being out to dinner, at a meeting, a movie, in the hospital, or in jail lol, your max hammer bid is now activated automatically once the coin goes on the block. The cherry on top is if a computer live bidder or phone bidder or floor bidder then places a bid while the coin is actually on the block, and if it ties your max hammer bid, YOU win the tie! The only way to lose is if someone early on had a max proxy bid as high or higher than your max bid, that early proxy bid will win, OR if someone places a higher bid than your max bid while the coin is on the block OR if someone else used this tool and either had a max bid higher than your max bid or had the same max hammer bid as you and placed it with that tool before you placed your max bid of that same amount.

You can very easily CANCEL or modify this advance bid any time before the coin actually goes on the block.

GC does not have this tool that allows you to place a bid in advance that does not get activated at the time it’s placed, Legend does not have this, and DLRC does not have this. StacksBowers has something similar to this, but is very difficult to change or cancel, and then prohibits you from placing a higher bid when the coin is on the block if your previous max bid gets outbid. I wish they would all develop this useful bidding tool. I use it all the time!

Heritage also allows you to correct a bidding mistake.

While I’ve never asked for this, I’m sure you’re correct, presumably if the bidding error is made before the coin goes on the block. However, my guess is that’s also probably true for most, if not all, of the other major auction houses too.

Did any of those three coins happen to have a PhotoSeal?

No, but as noted they each had a CAC. In my opinion, there’s a good chance they may not have been previously sent to Rick Snow for his Photo Seal.

You can do it yourself in the software. The others make you call in.

Yes, had to be before it hit the block I found out when I accidentally bid 777,777 instead of 777. Lol. I was impressed they took my bid.
