My Tuesday night Holdem game

We play an elimination style game and eventually pay the top 4 survivors in a 40%, 30%, 20% and 10%. Buy-ins are $25, with multiple re-buys until the blinds get to $400-$800, then there's a one time deal where anyone can buy $5k in chips for $20...most do. Last night we had 17 players, many went to the well, and the actual cash pot swelled to $630.

The game has your typical rainbow chaser, bluffer, clueless players whose style remains consistent Tuesday after Tuesday. I play pretty tight and watch more than I play, but I mostly watch the players expressions as the flop, turn and river comes. A couple of players love to share their two cards with next door neighbors who are out of the hand seeking commiseration, of which they get very little...you've seen these players I'm sure. Then you have the groaners who have folded, but as the turn and river come, they comment on "I woulda had a flush, full house, etc". We're on a 10 minute timer as the blinds move along. Guys get involved with talking about fishing, golf and other things that tend to eat the clock. Once "blinds are up" is announced, its funny to hear somebody say "I already had my blind in"...meaning he may have saved a paltry $200 or $400 in chips because he got his blind in a nano second before the little phone sound went off. We're talking guys that are very wealthy, we have a couple of millionaires who play, but you'd never know it.

While the game moves along, for some reason a few players seem to struggle to fold when indeed they should...occasionally, they do hit a flush on the river, or, after hanging in with a paltry low pair, either hit two pair, or hit trips, this reinforces their playing ability, which keeps them locked into being losers. I saw one guy call a $7k bet with 9-2 suited, he lost.

So, we're down to 5 players, me being one. Blinds are now $2k-$4k, bluffing is in high blower. One guy goes all-in for about $15k, next guy calls, but he's a bit short as does the guy next to me. I have pocket jacks ( B)B) ). I'm dealing, and we all just turn our cards up, everybody is all-in. First card on the flop is a jack...I have trip jacks, and the crowd moans...I win and take first place, game is over.

I won $250, 40% of $630. See you next Tuesday. B)B)

Paul, you have a standing invite.
The pic that did the deed last night. Lots and lots of chips out of pic, but you get the idea. Blacks are $1k, Greens are $500, Blues are $200, Reds are $100, and of course the $5k chips...had lots of those. B) . Not bad for having started with a $5k buy in about 1.5 hours earlier.

I might take you up on that invite Al! 🍻

Before it was outlawed here in Washington, I played quite a bit of online poker. I also played tournaments where I could in local casinos. I'm not a fan of the standard cash game format at casinos - I much prefer no limit tournament style play. And I definitely hate re-buys :)

I wanted my online play to be very low risk so I started with a stake of $50. Played the lowest buy-in tournaments on Poker Stars. My goal was to double my money and then move up a level in buy-in and keep repeating that process. I won the very first tournament I entered* and was always ahead on money. Wasn't exactly a fast way to make money - about $1 for every 3 hours of playing time - but it was highly entertaining for me. Washington banned online play so I cashed out my funds (all $67, LOL). Shortly thereafter, there was the huge scandal with player funds getting locked up by the feds and poker sites ripping off customers. I avoided all that thanks to getting banned first.

    That's cool you've got a regular game. I'm a bit jealous.

I've won dozens of tournaments online and a few in-person. Nothing big - largest win was $400 (my first win, no less!) at a country club. That was a lot of fun. When we got to heads-up, I had a huge chip lead so the other guy was basically forced all-in very quickly. I had a suited ace, so easy call. Probably would have called no matter what. I forget what he had but I was way behind and then hit runner-runner to finish a straight and knock him out.

Gave my wife half the money and spent the other half on a box of 2004 Leaf Limited Football, one of the first super-premium football releases. Didn't hit anything big in it but did get a Larry Fitzgerald rookie that I've long since let go.

** - I once accidentally entered an Omaha tournament thinking it was Hold 'Em. Got in there and literally had no idea how to play. The other players actually taught me how to play - and I won the whole thing. First and only time I've ever played Omaha, LOL.

    Party Poker. Circa 2005? 2006?

I started out with $250, I played an hour or so after work on my mothers computer when I would stop by, 1-2 no limit cash. I built my $250 up to $4300 and change.

My hand is QQ, flop is Q22, turn is 9, River is 3.

I can’t remember the exact betting sequence but the end result was I lost all of my $4300 against 4 deuces.

Worst and most expensive hand I ever lost

#LetsGoSwitzerlandThe Man Who Does Not Read Has No Advantage Over the Man Who Cannot Read. The biggest obstacle to progress is a habit of “buying what we want and begging for what we need.”You get the Freedom you fight for and get the Oppression you deserve.

What we have here is a failure to communicate

The only man on earth who could eat more than 50 eggs...the one, the only, the Great, Al Bundy.

    ......
After seeing Al Bundy pop up here in Sports Talk I went back and re-watched some clips. I used to watch the show. It definitely holds up, and then some, in my opinion.

Speaking of Hold Em let’s talk best poker movies…

    Rounders is my favorite

I will say that Mollys Game was pretty damn good especially the scene where a consistently great and smart player goes on Tilt. Here is the YouTube if your not familiar, it’s a great watch.
