Environmental damage. Maybe buried. Probably a metal detector find.
Find its MM then bag it and tag it for the history. Sliver content ya know, it could tarnish .
Let it.
? 1941 has no silver in it.
This is not a war nickel and has no silver content. It's just very worn and beat up and like a previous member said possible environmental damage. War nickels were in 42 43 44 and 45. The wear on this nickel is not uncommon in my opinion, the nickel is 81 years old
USN & USAF retired 1971-1993
