    Interesting question. Pics of the two varieties for comparison. Before doing further research, my initial thought is that they were probably not made at the same mint. For now, no opinion on authenticity.

    Did a search through the eBay archives - could only find a single other example of this "variety" (all the others show standard design elements). Looks even more suspect circulated...

    There are a decent amount of contemporary counterfeits of these C.A.R./Guatemala style 1/4R, but primarily of the earlier dates (latest I recall seeing previously was 1861).
