I picked this one up at a small show, as a type to go along with my quarter coin collection.
Fourth issue.
Inexpensive fun.

This 1863 Fractional Note with two U.S. Generals Sherman and Grant on it is definitely my favorite of all the fractionals.
Did a little research and found out that only three people were ever depicted on fractional currency during their lifetime: Francis E. Spinner (Treasurer), William Fessenden (a Senator and Secretary of the Treasury), and Spencer Clark (Superintendent of the National Currency Bureau) but when Spinner and Clark decided to have their portrait depicted on currency and it was suggested that the Treasury's privilege of portrait selection for currency was being abused.
After that, in 1866 Congress enacted legislation specifically stating "that no portrait or likeness of any living person hereafter engraved, shall be placed upon any of the bonds, securities, notes, fractional or postal currency of the United States.” and on the date of passage, the plates for this 15-cent note depicting Sherman and Grant had not been completed and fell under the scope of the new law and were never issued. So, the Sherman-Grant note only exists as a specimen and doesn’t have anything on the reverse.
Too bad because it’s such a cool note
A 5th issue 10-cents Fractional (Fr.1264) featuring William Meredith. This one has a green seal and is slightly harder to find than examples with the red seal. The back of the note is where you can see the use of security fibers to prevent counterfeiting.
Started venturing into World Currency and picked up this one because it reminds me of old U.S. Currency :-)
Let’s keep this thread alive.
