I always have a hard time telling by looking at the date (old man = bad eyes) so I use the strike on Liberty - weak strike - small date, strong strike, large date. Here is a good reference.

Going by Red Book pics it appears to be the large date low seven. More knowledgeable replies to follow.

  • This is what I'm talking about... this is pcgs idea of a small date. If you go into coin facts it is under 1971 small date with a full steps declaration and sorry um no full steps and its a large date. Wth. Here is another example.... the top image is a small date. The lower is another large date with the small date designation. How am I supposed to trust these guys? This is so fishy.

Well mistakes are made on all types of grading and variety designations by the third party grading companies. Thats why it's important to have the knowledge about what particular coins you are collecting. And with that said, you do!

I am not, repeat not, knowledgable on Lincoln cents. As such, I cannot intelligently respond to your inquiry.

Notwithstanding, as pointed out by @WaterSport, the TPGs are not infallible.

Tried training a B&M owner on this. His reply was, they all look small to me as he returned the stack of 2x2's1970-S's back into his showcase....to screw more customers over. And that was the last time I visited his store nor stopped at his table at coin shows.

This variety is hard to see like the clear "S" (flat top) Type 2 on the SBA 1981 proof. They were designed to make us crazy not happy. I resigned to these CoinFacts

  • I literally have a quart size ziplock bag of 1970 s and going through them is making me crazy. Lol

    the top is Small
    the Bottom is Large

PCGS has another mistake in CoinFacts. I've seen a gold coin shown under a Silver Eagle listing, among other mistakes.

The bright side to the above is that you have both type in one photo now.

Finding varieties like this is maddening until you actually find one. When you find one keep one of each type for comparison purposes for future searches.

    Looks like a large date.
