EBAY - No tracking - buyer entitled to refund

I sell 5-10 small items a year on EBAY. Sold 17.00 card which i thought might go over $20 so didn't use the standard envelope. Had secretary mail it from work. She said no tracking since i didn't request. Card not delivered to buyer as of yet. If it doesn't show, am i reading EBAY policy right that buyer wins dispute since i didn't provide tracking? If you have tracking and not delivered, is that like the old insurance where item is covered? Or is there a way to get tracking on first class mail?

If you don't have tracking # then the buyer wins every time if they say it was never delivered. Very easy for shady jerks to get the card and then a couple weeks later open a case.

We have tracked registered mail in Canada, but it just costs marginally less than a tracked parcel, does USPS have that upgrade to lettermail service?

I believe that even if you didn't select Standard Envelope when you created the listing, when you go to print the shipping label, you can change the shipping to select Standard Envelope (if the item sold for $20 or less).

How long has it been? PO service is still spotty. Have some patience if it's less than 2 weeks and hope it eventually arrives. Hopefully the buyer has some patience too.

You will probably lose if you cant show tracking unless you used the ebay standard envelope. Would never send any card with just a stamp as they run it through the rollers and it can get hung up

IT IS ALWAYS CHEAPER TO NOT SELL ON EBAY

I'm a bit confused, are you saying you used a PWE with stamps? Because that's the only way I know to not get tracking.

Well, if there is no tracking, how do you propose to prove it was delivered? And as mentioned, once a listing is paid for, you can select ANY shipping method that eBay presents on the shipping label creation page (standard envelope would have been there since it sold for $20 or less). The options you put in the listing are just what the buyer can select and see what the charges are for it.

Anecdotally - Over the past six month I've had more claims on items not delivered ever in my history with eBay (1999). I placed claims and received immediate refunds since the cards were sent WITHOUT delivery confirmation. All cards were under $20. I don't know if it's the PO or negligent sellers. NO seller disputed my claim. I also didn't receive a card, but PO said it was delivered so I ate that one.

I really wanted the cards...that's the bummer about it all.

  • Thanks for the comments. I understand the loss is mine if it doesn't show up. My mistake was i prepared the envelope and my office just printed out the postage instead of printing an envelope with tracking. 3 scenarios:
    1. No tracking. Buyer doesn't receive. Seller takes loss.
    2. Tracking. Buyer doesn't receive. Tracking never show delivered. Who takes the loss? Is tracking insured?
    3. Can you insure first class envelope or package that is not priority?

    1. yes, seller loses.... or buyer receives, but claims didn't, seller loses.
    2. Seller takes the loss if NOT delivered. Can't keep buyer's money if they don't receive what they paid for. Tracking is generally NOT insured, but there are exceptions (eBay Standard Envelope $20 insurance, eBay International Standard Shipping $100 insurance, eBay issued USPS priority label $50-$100 insurance.
    3. You can insure anything thru USPS, but has to have tracking, so 1st Class Package or higher. On eBay you have the option of purchasing ShipCover insurance (again, tracked shipping method), which is usually cheaper that USPS insurance and a claim can be filed with an online form.

I've said this before, but of the hundreds or thousands of packages I've sent, I don't believe one with tracking has ever been lost. But, whenever I send in a PWE without tracking, about 30% of the time, the buyer claims it was never delivered and I have no choice but to refund. I am very surprised that 30% are dishonest to enough to lie about a $10 item just to get it for free.

I tried PWE once and was ripped off. Luckily it was only a $8 card, but I will never do it again. I tried to be the nice guy and save the buyer shipping costs for first class but after that experience I will charge $4 shipping just to get the tracking number. If the buyer doesn't like it, then they can buy from someone else.

You get "tracking" with eBay PWE (standard envelope) since last year, so don't need to charge $4 and get less on your bids...

Sorry. I should have stated I used PWE prior to eBay's standard envelope feature. I haven't tried that feature yet, but I am always reading the reviews about it here on the forum.

I’ve had the opposite experience, sent probably 200 cards without tracking and only have one claim submitted. But haven’t shipped much the past 2-3 year so that may have changed.

You should be using it, get more sales or more bids with the $3 deduction in shipping.

1 in 200 is incredible. Mine happened years ago. I wouldn't dare do it now. Mine was a small sampling, probably 3 out of 10. On one of them, the buyer messaged and said he didn't get his $7 item. I suggested he wait a bit longer. A few weeks later Paypal notified me that the buyer did a chargeback and not only was I out the $7, I also had a $10 charge in addition.

Ebay standard shipping has an element of tracking to it, what we are talking about is slapping a stamp on an envelope before standard shipping.

  • EBAY has refunded money as expected and also claiming they are not reversing the EBAY fee for selling since i didn't have tracking. So it seems that tracking is basically mandatory.

Sadly, I agree, tracking is basically mandatory. I haven't sent anything out in years without it because of the high percentage of cheaters out there.

Tracking has basically always been mandatory as you have to show proof of delivery... Not sure how one would show proof without tracking...
