Need Help With Old Capsules

VeepVeep Posts: 1,437 ✭✭✭✭

Does anyone have experience removing coins from these extremely tight, old holders? I acquired several sets of these from different series with some very nice coins. They are such a snug fit that most of the coins won’t budge. Here’s a capsule pic and “album” in which they are stored.

It is always a bit risky, but it can be done and gets easier after the first few. There are a few techniques, but this question first: Is the seam on the top (flat surface), or on the edge?

I don’t really see anything like a seam but there is definitely nothing on the flat surface. I’m hopeful…

Believe it or not, the easiest way is to take a small hammer and gently tap the edge of the capsule while holding against the concrete floor. Should only take a tap or two if done correctly. Hold the capsule between your fingers, set on concrete floor and then tap, tap.

Sounds scary, but it is not once you get a feel for it. The plastic is brittle and will crack quickly. The risk is that the coin could be damaged if not done correctly. Please practice on a couple of the cheapest coins, such as the 1964 nickels.

There's another way or two, but I recommend that you start with this.

Will try this tomorrow and report back. Don’t worry, I’ll use patience and will work on the technique with some of the cheapies. Thanks.

I would put a towel underneath it. Coins dropping on concrete would concern me.

This is what I would do. Once you get a feel for it, it'll be relatively simple. Start out with a light tap and increase the force as needed.

Have you tried flexing the whole page, a seam should reveal itself. But I agree with a large towel down just in case coins go flying. Good luck. Peace Roy

Wrap your hammer with a cotton tee shirt and towel or t-shirt on floor. Careful and good luck 😉🦫🙀
