  • Mike,

Who is this Wilson guy, and why are you offering Shane his weiner?...

  • Ian,

If you haven't noticed yet, on this particular board more intelligent posts show up in one day than show up on all the other boards in a week. For the PSA Set Registry Forum I have this advice for you, and I'm going to be blunt. Imagine that I've put on my old "teacher face" as I say this. Grow up and quit the innuendos and double entendres. If you know nothing about Wilson Weiners, look it up and then ask intelligent questions to fill in the gaps of your knowledge. When this board turns into the WWF collectibles chat, you'll be talking to yourself.

Now I've always thought you were a pretty nice kid trying to fit in with the more experienced collectors on this forum. Allow me to hold onto that thought. One more piece of advice. Do more listening than talking on this forum. There's so much to learn without having to comment on every topic. This is the best read on the boards. I'm four times your age, and I follow my own advice. I look forward to the education every day.

BTW, another good post, Marc. That sheet is impressive.

You might be able to outbid God on this one. I read the description and this sheet has had some restoration work done on it.

This doesn't make the sheet worthless, but it will no doubt make many potential bidders look the other way. Hopefully God is one of them.

Don't you just get a warm and fuzzy feeling knowing that this sheet had color retouching done to it. Perhaps they just wanted to make sure BVG wouldn't grade it. image

The restoration issue is certainly a tricky one -- and it is definitely handled different in the many collectible markets.

However, you are basically dealing with a unique item here -- The other uncut sheets that I've ever seen from this set (which is only one or two in my limited collecting experience) are the advertising versions. Mastro does claim that this is the only non-advertising uncut sheet available. I have no specific reason to doubt them on this.

Also consider that this is a set where a PSA 8 Ted Williams card will bring $50,000. And there are multiples of those, while there are only one of these. It is not abundantly clear to me how much restoration was done to this piece, and what cards it does or does not affect.

Our hobby has a few items that are spectacularly unique, and, in my humble opinion, the restoration adds to the magic rather than takes away from it. With an issue as difficult as the Wilson Weiners, I think this is a place where it applies. As an example -- have you ever seen any of the before and after pictures of any of the Darby Chocolate issues that have been restored? Since they are each essentially unique -- the labour of love that took the box from being ugly, dirty and old into a pristine-looking example is one that was money well spent.

I know restoration is a tricky issue -- especially when you have cards like the beautiful raw 1952 Topps Mantle restored that ended up in a PRO 8 holder. However, I think if the restoration is adequately disclosed, the issue is sufficiently rare, restoration can add some of the magic back to the hobby. Again, just my two cents -- which is way less than a neat item like this will eventually realize.

mikeschmidt - as strange as it may sound, what was done with the Darby Chocolates boxes (I never saw a before picture) is less bothersome to me that what Mastronet says was done here. They claim that this beautiful, one-of-a-kind piece received "[m]inor professional restoration . . . to reduce creases and firm up corners, and subtle color touches . . . at the extreme periphery". Restoring a piece because it's not quite perfect is a shame IMO. I would reserve restoration attempts for those pieces that really need it. [Disclosure goes without saying.]

jrinck - God isn't bidding on the sheet. He's collecting the whole set of players.
On a less blasphemous note, I hope the Ted Williams matter is resolved by having him buried in Arlington National Cemetery. I think Williams would have been pleased by that.

  • Nick -- not blasphemous at all, and actually quite a beautiful sentiment. I second that motion wishing I had thought of it.

  • Dom,

I am truly sorry about the post. This board has been a little, slow lately I guess, not very many posts. I see you all trying to come up with witty remarks as to items and such, and I figured I would try my hand at it. About the WWF comment, listen you guys may have grown up with 195X or 196X or even 197X sets, but the first set I ever collected was the 1987 WWF set. It is not very valuable, I do not mind, but it is pretty fun when you can buy boxes for around $8-$10 appiece and go through them all, and find a few cards that might fit well into the master set. As for doing more listening than talking, I was pretty offended by that. You insulted me, and segragated me by my age, and because of this, I am not allowed to talk? Listen, take a look at my sets, I've been a paperboy for 2 years, I work hard for my cards. I have a '68 set which is currently 13th, which I am proud of, and my '74 set is coming along nicely. If you thought I came on this board for the sole purpose of joking around, you are sorely mistaken, I am very serious about my sets. I make it down from Allentown to Ft. Washington everytime there is a show there, and for a 15 year old without a car, that is a nice feat if I may brag, and no, my parents do not take me. I obviously don't have the type of budget you guys have, but I entered the set registry to enjoy the competition and friendship that builds when building a set while others are building the same set. I can understand that maybe I took the joking around a little too far, but to be honest, I just wanted to fit in. Dom, I am sure you remember when you were my age. Do you remember how nervous or maybe you just wanted to say something that stood out to catch the attention of the adults in the room? Well, that was my only intention, and I apologize once again.

    Ian
  • Ian,

No apology necessary. I was right about your being a pretty good kid. However, I'm not sure you read my entire post where I said I also practice what I preach. I do way more listening and reading than responding. Age has nothing to do with it.

  • Dom,

Thanks, yeah, I am sorry, I noticed I did misread your post. Got a little caught up though, and everything seemed to mix together. By the way, WWF grades came back a little while ago, got the chance to scan them, if anyone is interested, here is a sample of what you will see on the registry once I get above 75% so I can receive my 5 free gradings image. Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe this is a 1 of 1 image.

Ian - You should know about wieners with Yocco's in your backyard image...jay

To the rest of the board who have no idea what I'm talking about. Yocco's is a small hot dog chain w/ 3 or 4 outlets in the Lehigh Valley (PA) thats been in business since the '20's.
  • Haha, my goodness! I LOVE Yocco's! They still play the cheesey "Let's go get Yocoo'ed!" commercial from the late 80's! Gotta love it, plus like the commercial says, the secret sauce is one of a kind!

Sorry abou the bad link, just wanted to find a quick host for the photo, so that I could add it to my post, I'll figure out how to work the link procedure one of these days...

Not only is that Outback Jack 1 of 1, but I think it's safe to say I have a few other one of ones, should bring in the big bucks on eBay right? image Everyone wants 1 of 1 PSA 8 1987 WWF Topps cards! image

  • That's good - stopped at Yocco's many a times off of Exit 14 (old exit #, I know) on I-78!

Yes, the restoration work on the Darby Chocolate cards was something else. The restorer who did those cards used to do some of the finest work around. It is always a great debate on whether or not restoration is an acceptable practice with cards.
I tend to agree with NickM, restoring an exmt piece to NMMT is a shame. Restoring a Poor piece to Ex or better with disclosure makes sense.

    Jay,

Don't even go there. After having a couple of dogs from the Yocco's across the park from Birney Stadium about 10 years back - I couldn't go to work for the next three days!image Don't know if I'd classify it as food poisoning - BUT IT WAS CLOSE!!!! I've stuck with Dempsey's or IHOP ever since!

Did anyone look at the rest of the offered items? Maybe the title of this auction should be Return of the Honus Wagner Strip. Yep, it's back! The consignor is a 15 year old who won it from SAH and as is the case, he was stuck with the tax liability. I wonder if it will break $100K this time???
  • My goodness, Dempsey's? You know where Dempsey's is?... Wow, I am impressed image You are talking about the one in the Westgate Mall complex right?

Here's another beauty that Mastro is offering. This card was just graded as evidenced by the serial number as well as the corresponding jump in the Pop. Report. I wonder if it was the SBC 96 card that Mastro guaranteed at least a PSA 8 on the crossover. If so, someone just made a heck of a nice flip.

    Few comments:

I grew up less than a mile from the Westage Mall -- my younger sister loved Wesgate Pizza, which was always the greasiest and worst pizza around.

I know Dempsey's, too. To think that there is a diner out there that can put the likes of Denny's to shame is truly ridiculous.

Yocco's has been in institution in the Lehigh Valley for as long as I can remember -- and they haven't changed a thing in over 20 years -- probably a lot longer than that, though.

Ian -- there are many young members that post and lurk on these boards. I count myself in that group, coming in at 26 years old, even though I guess I'm getting up in the years ;-) Just because many of us talk about vintage cards does not necessarily mean that we grew up with them.

That Wagner strip is starting to piss me off, it has been around so much lately. The truly amazing thing about the strip, though, is that this is the closest evidence that *ANYONE* has ever had regarding an uncut sheet or the production process of the T-206 cards. Arguably the most popular tobacco set of any sort, it is amazing that there is only research into the production process, with no clear definitive answers -- with the printers' scrap, production proofs, and factory miscuts lending only confusing information to the debate.

By the way -- since there are so many Allentown/Bethlehem/Easton people that seem to read this board, does anyone perchance remember Schoenen's Supermarkets? It was on Easton Ave. for about 70 years, closing in 1996. It was about two blocks from Liberty High School. Would be interested to hear any positive responses on that!

Judging by the centering and a few distinctive characteristics, I think the PSA 9 is indeed the SBC card from the last auction. I wish I had the cajones to outbid the winner in April.

    What a thread!

Where else can you get posts about 3 completely different baseball sets, hot dogs, Dempseys, and the Lehigh Valley.

Regarding the Wagner strip, if I had the money (and I don't), I couldn't justify spending 100k on a card that has a big crease right down the middle. I understand the significance of a Wagner card, but I guess it's just my preference.

Oh, by the way, I grew up just south of Quakertown (Hilltown). When I was a kid, I really thought that was the actual "Star of Bethlehem".image
