Question about submitting Varieties for grading.

SanctionIISanctionII Posts: 12,584 ✭✭✭✭✭

I have two 1966 SMS DDO half dollars that I will submit for grading.

The PCGS # for this coin is 411639.

There are multiple Fivaz Stanton numbers assigned to this coin because there are multiple versions of the DDO (including FS-102, FS-103, FS-105 and FS-106). I do not which FS # would be assigned to the two coins (need to look into this).

In filling out the PCGS Submission Form is it necessary to do anything other than place the PSGS # (411639) on the form (i.e. do I need to state what I believe to be the correct FS #)?

Further, would PCGS note on the holders that the two coins are the 1966 DDO (with or without noting the FS # of each coin) if I do not check the box Variety Attribution and pay the extra $18.00 attribution fee per coin)?

Last year PCGS graded for me a 1961 DDR proof Franklin (the big one) and a 1956 Type 1 proof Franklin without me having to pay a Variety Attribution Fee for either coin.

I am curious if it would do the same for the two 1966 SMS DDO half dollars.

Your advice is appreciated.

In the past, they have graded the coins listed in the redbook without paying for variety attribution. If you do not know which DDO you have, you might have one that is not attributed. You better confirm before sending because there are MANY.

    Thank you for your reply.

I spent some time looking at the information and photographs on varietyvista for 1966 SMS half dollar varieties and I compared my two coins with same.

My two coins do not match up exactly with any of the listings in variety vista. In fact my two coins are themselves slightly different (I had thought that they were the same and consecutive strikes off of the same dies as I purchased them together in SMS packaging that was identical to each other; however the last T in "Trust" has a different appearance on both coins).

Very interesting endeavor and I am know ever more curious to figure out what specific variety these two half dollars are (maybe even as yet unknown varieties).

Post some pics please, I would like to see what you have going on on your coins.
Typically you have to pay for attribution unless the variety is in red book as mentioned, or on the Pcgs main coin lists (you don’t have to click “varieties” to see them).
If you pay for attribution and they are not a recognized doubled die, PCGS will either assign it as a “Minor Variety” or not at all. I do not know how they decide which.
Historically, some (a few) “minor variety” coins were later assigned FS numbers, but not too often that I am aware of.

It is possible you have new 'discovery' coins. I have submitted to Wiles for variety attribution in the past because many of the pictures in the cherrypickers guide are lacking in depth and a few are actually wrong. It also is cheaper than getting a no go from PCGS.
