Good News - Bad News
As I mentioned in a previous thread I was pretty unhappy with the grades received in my last sub. On a couple of cards it came back with such a low grades that they are probably not worth what I have into them. (That's the bad news) It's been a couple of days now and I've entered them all into my various FB registries and have had a chance to look at this all in a different light. Since I'm a collector as opposed to an investor or flipper I now realize I can get some pretty nice looking cards with lower grades than I would have ever considered adding to my collections. (That's the good news)
This card is an example of what I mean. This is a 70 year old card of a HOFer. While I agree it should not be graded an 8 like it was originally with Beckett, but I also don't think it's a 4. That said, I will gladly add cards to my PC that look like this that are priced according to what a PSA 4 should be priced at.
Since June 2020 I have purchased over 400 PSA graded cards and I can tell you that the newer graded cards are most definitely being graded tougher than those in years past. Again, good news/bad news depending on whether you are more interested in the card or the grade.

Todays 4's and 5's are yesterdays 6's and 7's . On the back of Glue Fingers is that an erasure mark?
I'm not typically one who will say "todays grading is tighter than yesterdays yada yada" but anecdotal and tangible evidence makes me go hmm...
edit: camera flash on the back I reckon. I would put that Lavelli in my collection and feel great about it. Nice card.
It is the same card no matter the grade. If not for sale it shouldn’t matter much.
Hyperchipper, I have no idea how your Jackson is a 5, I really don't. I promise you I have cards graded PSA 8 that are not as nice.
And the line on the back of the Lavelli is the reflection of the phone in the case, there is no erasure mark.

My guess is that it is surface issues that is causing the low grades. Maybe spider creases/ripples from right to left. Very common on pre 88 O Pee Chee.
I agree...front of card crease/wrinkle =5
yeah, on the back of that card, between his name and his vitals, there appear to be a number of wrinkles...
Everything is for sale eventually. Unless they bury you with it. Even then, two thousand years from now ,when you get dug up, someone is going to want to know the number on the slab is accurate.
That Tom Jackson, at first glance anyway, has gotta be the nicest looking 5 I've ever seen.
And sadly the individual grader as well. I agree with Tabe's comment above. This is one of several instances where if sub-grades were implemented, it would take out some of the mystery.
Gretzky,Ripken, and Sandberg collection. Still trying to complete 1975 Topps baseball set from when I was a kid.
