These notes were, at one time, in a bank-issued paper band, removed and individually graded, cut out of those holders and repackaged in another holder after being replaced in the paper band? And one of the notes is torn? Had one of the "not top tier" grading companies done this, I wonder what the response here would have been...

    Significantly different ;)

Obviously a tear so shame on them for missing that. A very cool item though in the jumbo holder!

Not to beat a dead mule, but what is the meaning of "Mule" on the PCGS label?

Give up. This is the coin forum. :p

I know that in other cases if the front plate is paired with a back plate that it is not normally supposed to be with, they call it a mule. Not an error, just a minor mismatch.

What is the definition of "unopened"?

I would think that having each of the $500.00 bills previously graded by NGS and placed into separate NGS holders (which would require removing each bill from the paper wrapping shown in the PCGS slab photo) would be something that most persons would consider "opening" the pack of bills.

Maybe instead of the term "unopened", the term "restored to its original state" would be more accurate.

Over on the sports card side this procedure would not fly and be looked down upon. You cannot open vintage boxes of sports cards and still declare they are unopened. But you can verify the contents therein, just can't claim it is an unopened boxed product.

Honestly I'm not sure. There's probably a few banknote collectors here that would know. I'm personally pretty new to collecting them!

This $500 pack is very cool and made even cooler by being graded by PCGS. Today I just sent in two half packs of Star Notes for grading. I had 200 Star Notes but only 100 were consecutive serial numbers -needed to be for grading. Photos when they come back!

    Really cool strap of notes.

"A mule note is simply a Series of notes that uses back plates from a different Series. Mule notes can be produced by using back plates from a prior Series — The Series 1963 $1 Federal Reserve Note, for example, has new face plates, but uses back plates from Series 1957 B $1 Silver Certificates.

Mule notes can also be produced by using back plates from a newer Series — Series 1934 $5 Federal Reserve Notes with back plate numbers 939 are Series 1934 faces with Series 1934 A backs!"

My pack grades are in, no photos yet tho. Both packs received Gem UNC 65 PPQ. Pack grading is a little different than single bills, there is an average figured in from the highest quality usually found in the center of the pack to the outer bills.

Can I ask do they charge 1 flat fee to grade a pack of notes, or do you pay 100 grading fees for the pack? I’ve never seen what the actual pricing structure is to do this.

Just one flat fee. Right now it's $60 for the holder and a service level fee. If it were 100 grading fees, they would probably all be graded separately in their own sleeves. Check on the PCGS link at the top, look for grading currency and you will find the instructions for grading a pack! A pack is 100 and a half pack is 50, the only two options available....and if you are short one bill- the whole thing just gets returned to you without grades! I had 200 bills, but they were not all consecutive. I was fortunate to find two consecutive half packs!
