Gaspipe26: Do the '69 Topps MintXPress Lots Look Familiar?

Bob,

I just notice a major offering of '69 PSA 8 and PSA 9 cards offered by MintXPress. Could these be the same ones that someone obtained from your set that Superior just auctioned off? By the way, no sign of the Aaron PSA 9 anywhere.

Well, I'll tell you this. Chris said the buyer was a collector but it seems as the collector decided to chop the set up because these are the cards from my ex-set. I havent deleted the set yet because I havent been paid for it from Superior. When I receive the check I'll do that. Will I be bidding on these? I would be a fool not to. I just might buy the whole thing back.

Maybe the collector had a high-grade set and only wanted to retain certain cards....
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • In a way, I am sorry to see this amazing set broken up if these lots truly are the "Gaspipe Collection".
Time will tell if the no reserve option was a smart one. My guess is it probably wont matter. There is enough interest in this set to drive the prices up. I am a little surprised that Paypal or credit card payment are not offered. There are definitely guys out there who would go into hock for this sort of thing.
Although, I could understand Mintxpress wanting to turn the money quick for their consigner.

Whats next? 20 card lots being sold by the winner as single card lots? Stay tuned.
    Great stuff regardless!

    Bob, please shed the light.

How can anybody make money re-selling the cards so quickly? Assuming you pay $100 for a card from Superior + the 15% buyers fee and you are at $115 without shipping. Also, assuming MintExpress charges 10% to sell your card you have to sell it for $130 just to see any profit.
  • Bob - I see you check in on this while I was typing. You know the cards as well as anyone. Good Luck with the buy backs.

The post office and the middle men will make money. The other folks involved? It remains to be seen...

The Major Stars and most of the real tough ones are not in the listings. I'll bid on some of the lots but not all.

I think it is a shame that set has been chopped up. While it's completely within the rights of its new owner, there is just something wrong going on here - at least it feels that way.

I have mixed feelings on this. First, I'm glad the cards are being made available again. Unfortunately, some of the stars appear to be unavailable. Second, I don't like buying in lots. I'm sure for MintXPress, this is the way they operate. Listing 400 cards is probably too time consuming for them. I don't like bidding on lots where I only need a small percentage of the cards. I don't think I'll give these lots any serious consideration.

Incidently, congratulations Ray! It looks like you are the '69 Topps King until further notice.

My guess is that these lots are either won by a collector needing most of the cards in a single lot or by the next level flip-artist. In the flip scenario, the lots will continue to be available in smaller groups down to the individual card level. The market is efficient.

  • Dude - Thanks....I am sure it is just fleeting glimpse! Day after day I feel like I am on that old TV show "Land of the Giants" as I look around at greatness beside me.
Although I can take some pride in what I have accumulated so far you guys (Bob, Ron and yourself) keep me grounded. I do love it and keep at it but the hill gets steeper as you know.
Your sets are a testiment to what can be.
    Thanks again.

because I havent been paid for it from Superior

I would be a liitle pissed . Superior got paid.... already mailed them out , now there on ebay ...and you havent seen the funds. That is weak.

  • I also wish they were sold individually. I'll probably make a run at a few of the lots but I only need 1 or 2 cards in most of those lots. If I win one or two, I'll keep the ones I need and flip the others. Incidentally, If someone on here wins any of the lots and doesn't need all the cards, I'd be interested in the ones I need. image

I'm pretty sure there is no consignor on these cards. I think Mintxpress is the one who bought the set. I'm sure you will see the stars show up here in the next week or two. OR probrably at the National.

I agree with Boggs, if the funds cleared and the lot was shipped out, your payment should have been mailed out at the same time...jay
  • aro13: Actually, the average price per card paid to Superior -- including the 15% buyer's fee -- was only about $42 ($21,851 divided by 511 cards), not $115 as you mentioned. Seems like a bargain considering all those PSA 9's and stars. The average price per card that gaspipe26 will receive is about $37 (or less depending upon the commission).

Regrettably, I think it may take well in excess of the amount that gaspipe26 will receive from the sale to get back to where he once was with the 1969 set.... not to mention the time. With all due respect to gaspipe26, I don’t understand the logic of selling this prized set only to start almost from scratch again, unless there was a sudden need to raise cash for family needs, such as a car, child’s college education or medical procedure.

    Skycap:

For what it is worth -- when gaspipe26 builds his sets, he frequently does it from his private stock of excess Topps material that he has had sitting around for the late 20 - 30 years....

The new set is from cards I already have. If I were to sell this one I could have a third at 30-40% in a matter of a few weeks with what I have onhand. I also think that the cards listed now are the majority of easier cards to obtain. There are some tough ones but the real tough ones are not listed. I dont know where the other 150 are.
  • gaspipe26 and mikeschmidt: Thanks for clarifications. I'm new to these message boards and didn't know that gaspipe26 already had a great start on a another 1969 set.
