This altered '44-D is really nasty. One would think the coin alterer would pick a better '44-D to work on. It's not like they're hard to find and expensive.

Buyers of low grade key date coins like this may have been found to be less knowledgeable about the alteration and are thus the target market.
That's a sad coin indeed
Can't tell for sure, but it looks like the alterationist went the extra step and removed the VDB from Lincolns shoulder.
