Did We Ever Figure Out What Happened To That Nickel With Weird Steps?

Several years ago someone posted photos of a jefferson Nickel that has some really odd looking steps. There appeared to be several thicker clusters of thin steps within the staircase of Monticello.
If I remember correctly it was a 1938-S.
There was several pages of discussion in the thread and I believe the coin was viewed in person by one or more experts.
I followed the thread for a while but eventually lost track of it.
Does anyone know what ever came of that? Or remember that Nickel at all?
