Lincoln Question For The Specialists ....

Does anyone recall seeing a Mint State 1943(p,d,s) Copper Cent or a 1944 Steel Cent in a PCGS holder? What is the highest PCGS slabbed coin for each of these (4) Lincolns? Anyone? Thanks. Wondercoin.

    Mitch,

These coins get reholdered every now and then for the upgrades so it is hard to know what is currently in a PCGS holder. As of about 18 months ago there was a 1944 steel cent in a PCGS MS 60 holder. Heritage offered it in the Santa Clara sale but it did not reach reserve. The finest known 1944 steel cent is reported to be a "MS 65" but I'm not aware of it trading hands in the "slab" era.

The only 1943 copper cent I recall hearing about in an MS grade is the D mint coin. Superior sold it for a little over $80k back in 1996 in an NGC MS64BN holder.

All of the other coins I can recall were AU or lower. Also, PCGS only started certifying off-metal coins relatively recently I believe which may partly account for the dearth of these fantastic errors in PCGS holders.

    Hope that helps,

    WH

Wayne: That really helps. You own a 1944 steel cent yourself - do you not? image Wondercoin

    Mitch,

Yes, I did own one for awhile (it is the one I'm using for my icon) but sold it awhile back when I got an offer I couldn't refuse.

I recently purchased Sol Taylor's book on Lincolns which is the latest major work on the series. I had not previously looked at it much but just pulled it out to see what he had to say about these coins. Unfortunately, it looks like he didn't update this section much from prior editions. However, from the sales he lists, the only 1943 MS coin is the D I mentioned above. He does include some correspondence from Fred Weinberg and others that have examined a BU version, however. As for the 1944 steels, there are 4 reported trades of an MS 63 (likely the same coin) and two reported sales of a MS 60 (again likely the same coin). He also lists three 1944D steels in MS 62 with consequetive certificate numbers (probably submitted as a group; so likely separate coins). Everything else referenced looks to be lower grade. I have several other works on the series I could look through but I think this is basically the know population of MS coins.
