1856-O $10 Liberty Gold PCGS AU58 at GC (Lots of PICS here)
This is an extremely rare New Orleans Mint $10 Liberty Gold piece.
Sitting in capital plastics holder "undiscovered" by a friend of mine's family estate since the late 1960's.
As the story often begins, a friend of mine asked me to look at her grandfather's coin collection left to her mother a long time ago.
From the original photos she sent to me, I did quite the double take when I noticed the O mint mark on the back of some otherwise common date gold pieces...
Long story short, it turns out it was quite a scarce coin in pretty spectacular condition.
Original mintage of only 14,500 - PCGS estimates survival rates at only 100.
Only 2 have been graded higher, 1 in AU58+ and 1 in MS60
One thing that doesn't seem to photo well is the fields are extremely mirrored, almost prooflike flashy!
I sent it to PCGS on her behalf where it graded AU58 and it is now consigned with Great Collections.
