I just purchased this one to have one with the motto for my type sets.
But I still think I like my 1849 slightly more than this new one. I actually picked the new one over a few darker ones I was considering for my type sets because I thought this lighter one matched the 1849 better even though I’m less sure of the originality of the new one than I would have been with the darker ones. That’s how much I like this 1849
For the Without Motto variety, I have the ubiquitous 1860-O. The With Motto variety is represented by an 1873-P. a coin that I believe to be underrated, chosen after considering original mintage, PCGS population vs. other dates, and price.
Had always wanted one of these. Love this one! Kushing and Osburn in their book say that the 71-cc is as rare as the 73-cc collectively in all grades. I see the 73-cc as considerably rarer, hands down.
@semikeycollector - I agree with you regarding the overall rarity of the 73cc $ over the 71cc $. But to find them original they are just about equal. I have passed on many 71cc dollars over the years because they all had issues. Both are extremely rare with CAC approval. The recent Heritage sale had a 71cc $ pcgs AU58 cac that sold but really wasn’t all there in my opinion. Better then most for sure but was not a coin I’d want if it were not for the cc mint mark. On the other hand the battle born 1873 cc $ was an absolute dream coin! When a nice 71cc or 73cc pops up it’s a rare event.

Crusty,
Thank you for sharing your knowledge as a specialist! Learning things like this takes years of experience and as available as some knowledge is, this depth of knowledge is not.

Are you talking about the uneven toning that the 71-CC has? I see dark spots at 5:00 and also around the date on the obverse and at 3:00 on the reverse which are only visible on the slab shots.

@skier07 - Here is the 71cc $ I was referring to. The toning does not look original but maybe it’s better in hand. I don’t swim in that deep end of the pool. But at least the new owner has one! It’s such a rare opportunity to find a 71cc with CAC approval. The date just comes crappy. I’ve only found one that I liked. But it sold at stacks before I was into the hobby.
I didn’t realize you were getting into SLDs more deeply. I’ll send you a PM later today. I like your 60o $ a lot. I saw when David Kahn listed it and felt it was very fairly priced. Almost bought it myself but I already own a few of the date and decided to let her go. Super crust on the 46! Nice 42 and 47 too. Keep up the good work.
@semikeycollector - Thanks for the kind words. If you ever want to get a sense of how tough a particular SLD is to find nice. Just check the CAC pop report. It’s not perfect but it will give you an idea.

Ugh! Makes my head hurt thinking about how difficult quality seated dollars are to find. When you locate one, you have to buy it, as they come by so infrequently. @Crusty, you are building a hell of a nice set!

I too only own one (AU58 CAC):

Some spectacular coins on this thread! My first and only Seated dollar is a pedestrian date that I bought raw and just got back from grading (AU-50):
I guess trade dollars don't count (although they are in the LS registry set!). So here's my one.

@Cocoinut - Totally agree! The 73 $ is a true sleeper in the series to find PQ. Finding an original example takes years

I'm pretty sure this one has been messed with but it looks nice in my Dansco.

Some great coins in this thread! Congrats to those posting their coins. You own some really nice pieces!

Here are a few. The 1847 is my favorite followed by the 1860-O.

I've added these two since my last/OP.
I'm getting the itch, again, and will have to pick up more soon.
I've learned something, though. You don't find Seated Dollars....They find you, when they become available.

@Walkerfan I love that 1840! Original skin, color and unmeshed with. That is a real treasure to find! Congratulations. Is she CAC'd?
@Inspired70 Thanks! She's not CAC'd.....At least not yet.

Thanks Crusty! Very true!
This one is AMAZING!!
