Talk about a timely subject - I was expecting a package today (with a $5,000 item) that was sent by USPS Express Mail. The mailman usually comes around 2:00 pm here so I went out front to do a little yard work (it's warm enough to do that now in South Carolina) and wait for him. Sure enough, he shows up at 2:00 but, instead of pulling in the driveway, he just stuffs the package in my mailbox and drives away! And yes, it says right on the package - Signature Required. All's well that ends well but I'm still going to my local P. O. tomorrow and scream at them.

Can you let us know what they say?

I have had good LUCK with USPS and Fed Ex ... but items sent to me by UPS is another story ... either lost for weeks or in the last case lost for good (more like stolen) ... the shipper did refund my money within 2 weeks after lost package claim but still a missing coin most likely I will not see again in auction for 5 or 10 years.

I lose no sleep with my stock market investments but I do with coins being shipped.

A signature required package was just left in my mailbox.

I was out of town Saturday. When I got back there was a peach slip on my door for a prescription. Never expected CVS to ship with Signature Confirmation. Went to the post office Monday to pick it up.

Just got handed a registered and watched the carrier sign my name which he is still suppose to do because of the pandemic.

Extremely happy with the rare coin.

Get a "RING" doorbell. it will tell you someone is there even if they don't ring the doorbell. I have mine set to barking dogs when the motion sensor is activated.

I see several reasons why we are having so many issues with delivery of coins. One is carriers are very understaffed and a lot of new and temporary employees. Two is there are a lot more packages to delivery since Amazon has entered the picture ,which makes losing a package easier. Three and probably biggest reason is covid. Prior to covid all registered mail had to be signed for when delivered. The carriers now waive that requirement because of covid. This opens up the door to a lot tense moments when stuff is just left in box. Why is post office still making people pay for registered mail service when you are not getting the full service. I think once covid is done(if ever) then things will get back to a somewhat normal state.

The carriers are not supposed to waive this requirement. Rather, they are supposed to interact with you from a "social distance".

The current USPS rules for items that require a signature can be found:

    ~ and here (video).

If your carrier is not following the USPS rules, I humbly suggest a conversation with 'him/her'. It worked for me. :)

Went to the P. O. this morning and kept it very civil - I had calmed down since yesterday. Spent some time with the Supervisor of the facility and she agreed that should have never happened. So, to avoid the problem again, I signed a form that, on any future deliveries that require a signature, they will just leave the standard peach-colored slip in my mailbox and I will go pick it at the P. O. Not the ideal solution but my P. O. is only 3 miles away and I don't have to worry about something sitting in my mailbox. Sure, it can still get stolen by an employee but, at least, it will be totally be on them for any insurance claims.

Coins and bean stories give me joy. Their travels cause me anxiety.

@2ndCharter. I hate to say this but you will still get it left in your box as these special directions for mail usually dont get passed down from regular carrier to replacements. Hopefully i am wrong.

Those instructions don't go to the carrier. They go to the sorting room at the PO where they also handle stuff like vacation holds. That's not to say they couldn't mess it up at the PO and give it to the carrier, anyway.

@MetroD You are correct about what the instructions say about signing for signature deliveries. The problem is that there are so many post offices and most are headed by postmasters. Some of these postmasters will interpret these instructions as no signature needed and thus that is what employees are told. The employee does it wrong and just leaves it in box. Any experienced carrier should know better because i was always told the most valuable mail we carry is registered mail. Between inexperienced carriers, understaffing and the ever present you got to hurry attitude the box ends up in the mailbox without a signature. I am with you that it is not right and should be addressed with postmaster at the post office. Then of course you have the lazy carriers in the mix who do not care. No two post offices are ran the same even though the instructions are the same.

As recounted on this board last week...two weeks ago, I received the same delivery message...left in mailbox.

I'm in a large Manhattan building so I ran downstairs within 5 minutes of getting the delivery message via text, opened my locked mailbox and...NOTHING...empty!

I have since opened a case with the USPS, alerted the seller and eBay...and confronted the replacement mailman who is subbing on the route. Of course, he denies being an ignorant boob who either delivered it to the wrong box in the building or worse, to a neighboring building.

But in any case, I'm totally SOOL! My MS65/CAC old rattler 1946S Walker...that I got for $65 thanks to a typo in the listing, IS GONE GONE GONE! And it wasn't insured...even if the USPS decided to pay out the claim.

    So yes, we're all screwed!

And PS...back in the 1990s, my dad ordered $15,000 in platinum eagles directly from the Mint...and despite being registered and insured with a required signature, about 10 Mint boxes were left in a white USPS basket on my parent's front steps about 20 feet from the sidewalk...also in NYC. My father came home and almost dropped dead. For years, he would recount the story and ask, "What would have happened if that basket was stolen? Would the Mint or the USPS taken a $15,000 hit?

    What would happen today?

Hey, all I can do is try. If that doesn't work, then, the next step is get a P. O. Box.
