Tiger's baseball 78 team but Al Kaline?

I have a baseball that seems to be signed by the 1978 Tigers, about 26 names, at least that is what I've been able to deduce comparing the signers to rosters. What is perplexing is that Al Kaline's signature is also on there. Multiple colors of ink was used for the signatures. To my untrained eye, the signatures look like authenticated items I've seen online so if it's a fake it's a decent one but why would Kaline be on there? He retired years before and in the late 70's was working as a commentator. Any thoughts?

He went right to the TV booth for the Tigers after he retired. I don’t think it’s unusual for him to be on a signed 1978 ball. Great year to get a signed Tiger ball by the way. Lots of young talent on that team.

  • Thanks! And yes, that was the beginning of a good streak for the team.

This ball pre dates Detroit Tiger Fantasy camps by a few years so I'm guessing it's a Lakeland Spring Training ball. Or as simple as adding a Kaline auto at the park or card show after the fact

Yes, it was common to see him in Lakeland during spring training and In uniform. Saw him myself in the 90’s
