My new Victoria purchase

I really like my Victoria double Florin NEWP, bought yesterday from Mr. VDB Coins. Thanks, George!
There is a cool story behind the making of this short lived denomination. Check it out on Wikipedia.

    According to Wikipedia:

"The double florin in particular was criticised as it was close in size to the five-shilling crown, leading to confusion, especially since neither coin was inscribed with its denomination. The confusion was said to be particularly acute in public houses, where barmaids accepted it believing it to be a crown, giving it the nickname of "Barmaid's Ruin" or "Barmaid's Grief"."

I think that's pretty funny. Hell of a coin too!

The irony is that it was worth four shillings - which in the decimal coinage would be the equivalent of 20 pence - and it was confused with the crown or 5 shillings coin the modern equivalent of 25 pence. Similarly in the USA the 20c coin was introduced in 1875 and was confused with the quarter or 25 cents.

  • It's a bit odd they didn't write the denomination on it. After 1860, even the farthing had 'farthing' written on it. It seems in 1887-1892 they just decided not to bother.

Apparently, like the crown it was never demonetised - so is still legal tender for 20p.
