Is Technology going to be a bigger part of card grading

So what does the future of card grading hold. Are computer scans and electronic grading going to become a big part of the grading process, seems a lot of the grading could be done with great accuracy and speed by use of technology. I'm not saying that technology will take over, but with things like card "doctoring" centering, edges, corners etc.. these could all be determined within a few seconds and would have a computer generated grade that would be 100% consistent with no judgment call by a person. There will still be a human aspect needed in determining the final grade for things such as eye appeal, beauty is in the eye of the beholder...and therefore subject to who the beholder is.

Taking out the "human element" would be better than the inconsistent grades people have been getting.
Although high grades might be tougher to get......a mixed bag.

I agree with steel75. While many collectors have been yearning for more technology and less human opinion, it may be a case of "be careful what you wish for". Tiny flaws, not seen by human eyes, will now be seen. It will be harder to get that elusive "10". Many flippers, expecting 10s on brand new products, may be disappointed.

Witch will come 1st: Robots as umpires in MLB or no humans in card grading.

    1st - card graders.
    2nd - umpires.
    3rd - terminators.

NO. It's 2022. If it was going to be, it would have already happened.

Good point. I think my brother in Stepford has one of these!

Like umpires, I’m guessing we’ll need both.

Hmmm… I didn’t consider the mistaken timeline in my discussion…If only there were a good movie reference with multi time line universes….nope… not gonna go there.

I have no problems with these technologies…. Bring them on!!!

AI is honestly not all it's cracked up to be.

    Maybe in 10 years.

the human eye/mind is truly priceless @ this point in time.

  • It may be an opportunity for another company to enter the fray. It could be an IT company looking to expand that has technology rather than experienced graders. It would be an interesting experiment.

Point is moot to me. Machines can certainly measure cards more accurately, but if it's going to cost me $100.00 to grade a card.........................fuggedaboudit.
