a *MUST* baseball reference for advanced collectors

If any of you like to read through important reference materials for the baseball card hobby, I highly recommend purchasing a copy of the Copeland auction catalog.

Though not every single lot is pictured, it is of great reference value and serves much better than any year's worth of Mastro auction catalogs. The breadth and quality of items that were in Copeland's collection is absolutely unparalleled.

He had basically complete MINT sets of nearly every major and regional baseball card set ever -- including NM/MINT 1954 Wilson Weiners, 1967 Topps Stand-Ups, even a partial set of seven 1961 Topps Dice game cards.

From the tobacco/caramel era, there are amazing runs of E series and T series cards, including the highest of grades for all the rare variations and rarities.

The auction took place in 1991. Though the baseball card hobby has changed a lot over the last eleven years, many of these cards are the best in the hobby. Remember, this is the place where the PSA 8 NM/MT Honus Wagner T-206 came from, as well as many of the other high-grade tobacco-era cards (the Plank PSA 8 and the Magie PSA 7 came from here, I believe -- as well as cards like an Uzit-backed Cobb, a T-206 Mathewson proof card, high grade rarities from the T207 set, a T208 set!!, and many other rarities that would be worth tens of thousands today).

Perhaps the biggest change in "grading" from this catalog is that some of the cards would get an O/C qualification in today's world. But so many of these cards are only known in the single digits, that an off-centered high grade example is absolutely the best that there is.

This ebay seller has more copies of the auction catalog available: I would suggest contacting the seller:

I have a copy of the final prices realized somewhere, but I can't place it now. It is an invaluable reference tool for anyone who plans to expand their collection. It is also a reminder that though you may never seen some of your "want list" rarities, they are out there, somewhere....
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

You might try looking at some out-of-print book dealers. Barnes&Nobles is a good start.

Actually, old auction catalogues are quite collectible. A while back, I checked B&N about on old Sotheby's art catalogue and there were quite a few available.

My local Borders books has had a copy of the Halper Collection catalog for a long time. I always wanted to get it, but it's expensive (over $50, IIRC), and I'd rather spend it on cards. But if that one has it, it's probably available somewhere.
    WANTED:
2005 Origins Old Judge Brown #/20 and Black 1/1s, 2000 Ultimate Victory Gold #/25
2004 UD Legends Bake McBride autos & parallels, and 1974 Topps #601 PSA 9
Rare Grady Sizemore parallels, printing plates, autographs

    Nothing on ebay
  • Thanks for the replies guys. I'll keep looking.

Pinhigh -- Sorry to hear that they ran out of copies. They had 5 for sale on Ebay -- and I know that they contacted at least the next five bidders with additional copies available. I've been looking for a copy for a while, but I bet one will turn up sooner or later if you keep your eyes open.

  • I do not think that the 1951 Bowman Mantle's are the same card. The left to right centering looks much better on the SGC example than the offered one. Also, if you use the maginifier on the offered card, it appears to have a print speck on his cheek. The other card did not have it.

The manifier on their site is pretty neat but it take a long time to focus. I have a very fast connection and it takes a while. I couldn't imagine how slow it would be with a dial up modem.
