Best way to get fingerprints off a silver proof coin?

Herb_THerb_T Posts: 1,752 ✭✭✭✭✭

Bought some coins from Europe and a few have finger prints in the field, what is the best way to remove them without putting very small scratches into the mirrored surface?

Fingerprints can be problematic to remove unless caught early. Old fingerprints that have stated to etch into the surface will usually leave some telltale sign after conservation, especially on a proof surface.

Sorry I couldn't give you better advice. I would give the coin an acetone soak to remove any residual oils and minimize future damage and leave it at that. If you're lucky, it might lighten up a little. Good luck

Finger prints on a silver proof coin is especially bad - you usually ruin the proof surface trying any kind of fingerprint removal. May just have to live with them.

Acetone as mentioned above; You might also consider the compound MS70 rolled on gently, but anything harsh will leave marks!
