Younger collectors discussing why they collect

A brief piece in the NYT entitled "They Love Coins-- just not Bitcoin"

Can’t get past the paywall unfortunately. What were the cited reasons, and what ages are the subjects?
Nothing is as expensive as free money.
"It's like God, Family, Country, except Sticker, Plastic, Coin."
Fascinating. This comes up every now and again on the forum. My position is there are plenty of new collectors and only increasing as time goes on. It would seem that maybe I’m somewhat correct. Thanks for posting this 👍🏼

Three out of these four young folks are on a chat server (discord) that I am on. There are plenty of younger people in the business, they just don't have the budget to travel to shows and whatnot, so they congregate in the digital realm.

It’s great to see more young blood in the hobby. I see a lot of them active on Instagram. The cryptocurrency is “ones and twos” comment gave me a chuckle. 😆
Would someone please inform @jmlanzaf so he can provide a study to refute these wild NYTimes assertions?
2 comments: It may be why we have seen lot of new collectors dropping in on this forum of late. And I was especially pleased to read the first comment about investment because I felt again ( wrongly?) that all those new folks who recently dropped in only care about "how much is it worth".

i got an LOL out of the "1s and 2's" statement
It's all about what the people want...
I don't need to refute it. It is strictly anecdotal without any evidence for or against the premises that arose in the market research I provided earlier.
Of course there are younger collectors. What in that article proves that there is a growing number of young collectors or collectors of any age?
Edited to add: I would not be surprised if there was a surge in new collectors over the last two years. The number of collectors across all collectible markets has exploded recently. Trading cards and comics exploded much more than coins. And, as I've also been saying recently, I'm shocked at the strength of the STAMP market in the last 18 months. In fact, I have been listing almost exclusively stamps lately to try and deplete my inventory before the market reverts to the mean.
easily POTD.
Thanks for posting the article, DelawareDoons, I forgot about the paywall!
Thank you both for the great article!!

Good pub.
The collecting and history buff genes still exist. Hopeful reassurance for the rare coin marketplace.
Coins will outlast us all. They're not subject to hacking or to solar flares. The article reminds me of an interaction I had with someone a couple of years ago at the LCS:
Client: "Do you guys deal in bitcoin?"
Me: "No, it's not real"
Client: "Neither are the values we put on gold and silver"
Me: "Sure, but how are you going to make your wife happy at home?"
The client walked out at that point.

I loved the positive comments about the hobby.
I did not appreciate the childlike artwork. Looks like something out of "Highlights."
I sent in a correction about the "2018/7" date on the Nova Constellatio Quint, but they did not run it.
