Conder Tokens: The Marvelous Animals of Pidcock’s Exhibition

Conder Tokens offer one of the most varied and interesting areas of collecting. The series produced under contract for Gilbert Pidcock, advertises exotic animals of the menagerie in the Exeter Exchange in London, often featuring pairs.

There is now a living creatures registry set that includes these conder tokens.
I have always admired these tokens.
I've gone ahead and purchased the book, but I've yet to pull the trigger on purchasing one of the actual tokens.
Perhaps it's the fear that I won't be able to stop that holds me back.

Nice book. Having that must be plenty of temptation to buy some!
I have a few Conders. Pidcock's are some of the most attractive. Others are more about the political message, or just trying to sell something.
Me too. Another rathole for me to go down. But they are so cool!
I have a few, I wouldn't mind a copy of that book...

This thread reminded me how cool this series is! I’m not Mr Conder or anything, but I love copper and have a handful of these. Makes we want to try to complete the run!

Fantastic example!
It would be tough to complete a run made up of pieces of similar quality but what a sight they would be if you could.

Thanks JC!
I agree this token would be tough to grade match as a series. I always thought it would be nice to just make a run of MS examples from 64 BN on, maybe a 63 even depending on what’s holding it back and just let this one be the highlight. I was just poking around last night to see what is currently offered online and was pleasantly surprised there are some really nice pieces available! 🤔 Maybe I’ll email some of the dealers, I feel an earnest side quest brewing! 😆
A complete run of Pidcock tokens is virtually impossible to put together. There are 6 or more stoppers, where if you are lucky you MIGHT see one example at auction in your lifetime. Up until recently I owned one of the unicorns but I traded it to a Pidcock collector for several other tokens. D&H illustrate 99.9+% of the tokens, the one I owned is not illustrated.

Such a patient hobby.
Did you by chance save any pictures of your previously owned token.
Not only would I love to see it but I think it would greatly benefit this thread for the future as well.

Middlesex Pidcock's D&H 1071 - the only other example I know of was sold in the legendary Baldwin's Basement sale #97 in 2015 where an example brought 800 pounds. Their example had a little bit more detail but had corrosion. Baldwin's had been locking away some of the rarest tokens for 100+ years from some of the greatest collections assembled. I found mine on eBay for a little more than $100.
