I have bought quite a number of coins from auction houses..

And all came in like clockwork.
After my last shipment I was left to wonder whether had ever experienced a "lost" shipment?

I regularly sell coins on E-Bay and will ship slabbed material with tracking, raw coins with just a stamp plus 22 cents more for being non-machinable. I had one coin in all of last year that the party claimed he didn't receive.
I have no issues with the US Mail at all.
I just has a package from HA got stolen. That's the first in more than 10 years. Someone drove by and took it.
So if you ship something valuable make sure you buy the insurance or ship register. I just sent some coins to PCGS register. I used to ship priority mail with some insurance but now I changed to register mail with insurance. Actually it is cheaper that way but slower.
Hmmmm, I have to wonder and am a bit upset. I just received a $50,000.00 coin back from PCGS shipped Priority Mail! I would've expect Express but would have preferred registered because if the coin was lost I couldn't imagine the battle that would have ensued.
I had an outbound package with insurance disappear in route to our host. Postmaster said they "don't insure money" and "the item's worth was negotiable" so they only refunded the postage. They also stated the insurance might have been too tempting to a temporary employee. Further, they stated, "a bigger shipping container is harder to steal." Therefore, I ship by way of the pizza box sized priority mailer without insurance when accepting the possibility of missing in transit. If the item is too valuable to me, I then package it for registered mail.
I have heard horror stories about non-tracked first class mail getting lost. But what I found out is that if you either have a postage meter (or use the EBay site to print out the mailing label) you get tracking for free. Putting regular postage on it is not trackable, but you can request a tracking label at the PO. who has time for that.
The USPS site makes it easy to use Priority Mail, which IMHO is pretty efficient. I think that every slabbed coin worth over $10 should be sent either Priority mail with insurance or Express Mail. The other option is go with UPS or FedEx, where they really do run a tighter ship.
I had an empty, sealed box, delivered by UPS. It’s been 4 weeks waiting for them to complete an investigation. The package was coming from ANACS. They claim they can’t do anything until after investigation is complete. Meanwhile a UPS employee is enjoying my 9 coins.
I have never lost a coin when shipped USPS.

So many stories of lost/stolen mail makes me want to only buy/sell locally in-person.

I always use USPS Registered mail. I put a smaller box in a bigger box, someone would need to open two boxes to get to the coins. Use a larger box that can not be put in a pocket.
I am guessing they are self insured. They have a history of shipping coins and someone has run the numbers and know that it is worth the risk.
