Merc Guys & Gals: New 1928-S

CocoinutCocoinut Posts: 2,512 ✭✭✭✭✭
I just received a '28-S Merc in PCGS MS66, and it's everything I had hoped it would be. It's well struck, with the crossband about 50% full. Nice luster; the obverse is almost pure white (sorry, Ken), and the reverse has just the slightest gold tint. It's certainly not my most expensive Merc, but it's already one of my favorites. image

That is a Spitting Image of the One I Own. Looks Like there are a Couple of Ticks on the Obverse and the Coin Exhibits Very Nice Luster and Strike. Mines a Blast White One also.image See I do have a Couple of White Coins.image

        Jim,

Very nice Merc. What is the name of your set?

        Jon

After going out to the registry, I assume you are the "Jim's Mercury Set". Sorry for the dumb question.
      2. Nice coin, Jim, and nice pics.
It also looks a lot like the '29-S that I just recieved. It's a MS66 also, but the graders failed to see the fully split bands! image
I may just get up the nerve to send it in for a re-grade!

VERY nice coin. I think it's so neat to see a coin that probably looks exactly like it did when it left the mont, 74 years ago! Plus, when I enlarged the pricture, the cross bands looked a bit more than 50% full.

It's also interesting that Ken owns up to having a "white" coin. But I bet he's looking to replace with some sort of dingy coin..image

P.S. to Ken: The previous sentence was in jest. While I generally prefer "white" coins, I have come to appreciate toning more since seeing the pictures of your coins.

I'm glad you guys like the dime. I remember seeing several '28-S before I began my set; they all had the same creamy luster, and were blast white or very lightly toned. Wish I'd started a set back then.

        Don,

I was watching that '29-S as well, but somehow missed the end of the auction. I might have felt just a tad guilty if I'd sniped it from you image; it sure looked nice. I'm glad it found a good home. Good luck if you decide to send it in for a regrade.

I think this is one of the most enjoyable uses of this board, being able to share our enjoyment of collecting with one another.image

Great coin! I am so jealous of all these 66 No Bands coins you guys have acquired.

Oh well, all in due time. Always remember me when you upgrade to a FB coin.

          Tim,
My camera's a Toshiba that I bought 2½ years ago. It's 2.1 megapixels, and a good all-purpose camera. The biggest drawback is trying to photograph small coins, like cents and dimes; I don't always get the degree of detail that I'd like. It works well for larger coins; see the samples below.

          Ken,
I don't get true color on silver coins unless I take the pictures in a room that receives lots of sunlight. You don't want the sun shining directly on the coin, though. I seem to get the best results between 8:00 and 10:00 a.m., due to the angle of the sun. Give it a try.

You Realize I live in Oregon and the Sun is a Rare Sight.image Seriously I will give that a Try. The one time I went Outside and Tried sunlight only, the Pictures were Terrible. Maybe with Indirect Sunlight they will turn out Nice.
