A gold Buffalo Nickel is the perfect example of a coin that lies right on the line between something so cool that someone at the Mint would have had to have struck one, and so ridiculously impossible that nobody would have had the nerve to actually do it. Well, here we are!

When the coin was first shown to me at my table at the Long Beach coin expo, I was stunned and immediately felt that it could be genuine just from visually looking at it. After spending some time and using high magnification I felt very confident that it was genuine and an incredible coin that none of us ever thought existed.

Still need to figure out how to make iphone 13 produce awesome error coin in slab images:
My iphone doesnt like closeup shots, but one trick i use is to place the coin in the upper right quadrant of the image and move the camera back about 20% and tap on the coin to focus. Then you can crop the image to your desired size. there is a sweet spot and you may have to play around which quadrant you use depending on the angle of light, you can eliminate the reflecting of the camera and the light source.

I don't think that the coin passed secretly through the hands of that many people to become AU-53. I think that it was in a tote bin that was filled with nickel planchets and struck in error.
Someone out in the wild spotted the odd coloration present on a 5 Cent piece and culled it from circulation.
It could have sat for years in a nondescript junk box until again finding the light of day many many years later. As a matter of fact, other than some individual hiding it from the Government afraid it would be confiscated, that's my guess as to what happened to it.

I am happier with this pair of images, but will continue to experiment.
Here's a couple Bison, one from 1913 Mound Type & 2008 $10 1/4oz 24k. Similar in size, when I realized that I had to add the Gold Indian to my archive.
I am privy to the entire story of how it was discovered. I am not at liberty to spill the beans. If a previous owner wants to share more that is his option. It was not found in change nor discovered in a junk box.

Jon Sullivan has a Montana Quarter struck on a nickel.
Here is a rare "buffalo" bison.
Thanks, and a great coin Lindy. I'm glad you are having fun with it, and it certainly fits your "skull" theme. The state quarter double-denominations are super rare as an error type for the series, and you have a nice one.

The Mint brass probably went on a rampage trying to find out why the Eagle mintage was one coin short.

There were only 600 1916 proofs made.
Amazing rare buffalo errors. All of them so cool.
I think the Gold Buffalo takes it as the rarest of the buffalo coins.
