Very tough to hand pick quality coins to make up a classic set like that! I hope you are a member of a coin club where members would no doubt share your enthusiasm and accomplishment.

    Great coin...
And congratulations on completing the set.
I started mine in earnest in 1977/78 and didn't "finish" until 1994...so about the same time frame as yours took.

Excellent!!!! Love that the S mint is so clear!!!!

I wonder when that coin was pulled out of circulation? When I collected Walkers from circulation back in the early 1960s the pre-1934 dates were virtually never seen in anything close to that grade. I never found a 1921 of any mint period. Congratulations on completing a very tough set!

The half dollar mintages were low (or non existent) from 1919 to 1934, except for the 1920P and S. These coins had to work their tails off (and obverses!). Even when coin collecting became popular in the 1930’s, I doubt few were able to save half dollars.

I recall at a FUN show a few years back, I spent some time with a dealer who’d recently acquired an estate where the family had hoarded half dollars obtained from circulation during WWII. The early walkers were already worn to VG/F, but were still beautiful because of the originality. I bought a number of them, along with a few late date Barbers in about the same condition.
I would imagine that many early walkers were probably slicks by the 1960’s.

Congrats! That's an awesome coin, even if it isn't MS. As for me, I'm sticking to VF-20 to XF-45 grades for the early Walkers, so that coin would fit right in!

    That’s a super achievement.
That’s a really excellent addition to the set as well!

Wow, 16 years! Congrats! I have a Franklins set that is technical complete (all the holes are filled) but there are a few coins where upgrades are in order.

It seems like you took the time to fine coins that you were happy with and did buy a particular coin just to fill a hold. I need some of that discipline.

    WalkerFan,

did you happen to see the 1921-s Anacs 63 in GC this past weekend, curious to what you thought about the coin. It looked ok to me, had that toning spot on face only ditractor. Maybe only a 62 at the big two, but was curious as too your thoughts. I also wondered why it wasnt submitted to the big two before being sold. Im sure Ian would have reccommened it to his consignor if holderable in pc or ngc.

I sold my 21-s PCGS 58CAC thru gc earlier this year and it brought over 20k. Guy I bought it from years ago(now passed) , told me one day this would be a 20k+ coin, and he called it. I did well on it since I bought back in 2014. Helped on a few coppers that didnt.

And by the way, I like your new addition for the grade, lot nicer than many i see in this grade range.

Yes, I saw the ANACS 63 and the spot on Miss Liberty's head was a deal-breaker for me. I also have to wonder, if it had been tried to cross to PCGS or NGC and failed? A high profile coin like that deserves the better plastic. I think that keeping it in ANACS plastic limited the pool of prospective bidders. It WAS a nice coin barring the SPOT.

I saw your 1921-S 58 and bid on it. When the bidding got to be over 17-18K, all in, I backed off. Pesonally, I didn't like the strike on that piece. Thumb was a bit soft and so were skirtlines. The luster, CAC sticker and pressure from the 'Everyman' Collectors no doubt carried that piece to new heights. I have seen 62s sell for that kind of money. The market IS changing, however, so those days are likely GONE. You did VERY WELL.

Thank You, and I think my coin could possibly regrade at AU 50. The strike is likely in the top 10 percent. With soooo few survivors in this condition, that is one very LOW figure.

Thanks for your thoughts and congrats on your very successful sale!!!

Quite the tale of determination, @Walkerfan. Your enthusiasm for Walkers has me considering starting a small set of my own as my LCS has a very good selection.

Congratulations! That is one beauty of an XF45 1921 S Walker. The date is so well defined and struck. Again, what an accomplishment. I know you are proud, as you should be. Thanks for sharing your special day.
