1959 topps question about grading, tape, etc. need help
Ok I ought a collection for $20 of 1959 topps ata garage sale. Half of them seem to have a very small piece of scotch tape on the top of them as if someone tried taping these to a wall. All tape is clear and small and is hard to even see w the naked eye. It’s like he took time to carefully place tape on card. All of the key players, mantle, Musial, banks, Robert Clemente etc all have near perfect centering with crispish corners. Are these cards even worth getting graded or should I just accept that they are worthless? Basically you can BARELYtell that there is tape on them. What should I do ? Any type of advise helps, thank you in advance for answering to this post. Also I’m no dummy when it comes to collecting cards, just a dummy in this situation and grading old vintage cards.

Even though I don't collect cards or know much about grading them my guess is that the scotch tape will be the kiss of death and will cause them to receive very low grades if submitted. If you decide to submit them make sure it is worth the cost of doing so.

There have been ongoing problems for a while with new member posts defaulting here. If you continue to have problems, I would suggest contact @PCGS_Moderator or @HeatherBoyd for help
Sorry, but it's just as annoying for the coin forum members as It is for new sports card people
Reads as if you found some terrific cards- the '59 set is a nice set to collect. I would not get these graded as it will not be productive. I would buy sleeves/inserts and put the cards in top loaders and leave them raw. Even with decent corners and nice centering the tape will present a problem. I think these cards will still have value for those that seem them for what they are.., still a nice find. I suspect you will get some advice on the Sports card forum.

PSA will give you 3s or less because of the tape. I would send the top (Mantle, Mays, Aaron, Koufax , Clemente) to SGC at 35.00 a card and they will grade as A (authentic) . They will be easier to sell. The cost at PSA now is too high. An authentic graded Mantle is worth at least 100.00 . When or if PSA drops their price( 20 or 30) it might be worth it to take a 2 or 3 from PSA.
I have seen SGC Authentic cards selling for just as much, if not more, than some PSA 4-5. I wonder if people think the “A” is the grade as in 90+, like in school….I think you might get upwards of $200 for the big names with SGC Authentic.
I’ve had success removing some glues/tape from ticket stubs, boxes etc. Using a product called Bestine…which is essentially Heptane, a solvent. Use it liberally to soak the tape area until it starts to soften and separate…don’t rush it. Dissipates quickly and leaves no trace. Amazon carries it…follow safety instructions as you don’t want to be breathing this in.
How about a few scans?
Makes it much easier for the viewer.
These are your right answers. See if you can remove the tape using fmclaug11's solution and then send them to SGC. Graded Mantle, Mays, Koufax, Clemente, and Aaron will sell and be worth the grading fee regardless of what grade they get. The rest, not so much, maybe the Bob Gibson rookie. That's about it.
$20 for 1959 Mantle, Clemente, and Musial at a garage sale sounds like a steal, no matter how they look!!! I never get that lucky at garage sales!
