Basketball cards and those poor Washington Bullets
As some of you may know, I began a project a couple of years ago to "fill-in" the voids of basketball card production with original negatives and card designs.
Many basketball collectors from the 70's and 80's know that a majority of material comes from well-lit Washington in terms of images. Recently, I obtained about 1000 35mm slides from 1979-1985 that were virtually all shot in Washington. The result makes me laugh out loud though. I am making a set of 160 cards to fill in the MASSIVE gap of the 1982-1983 NBA season. It is in honor of the 40-year anniversary of when Basketball may have peaked! Watching these players seemingly dominate the Bullets just cracks me up. Obviously, the images are just moments in time, but somehow Rick Mahorn and Wes Unseld getting "schooled" constantly is some comedic sh*t. I have uploaded the card design complete with said Bullets getting their collective arses kicked, Lol

Beautiful cards as always, hope you're doing well buddy! 🖒
Not too bad, thank you!!! You're always so kind!
The carnage is not limited to any one card...but this is one of my favorites--the forearm cracks me up. Again, I know it's a common thing, but...poor Mahorn, Lol

These are actually pretty funny, I remember the Bullets
That forearm is hilarious, you have to feel sorry for the Bullets! 😂😂 Are you running the Christmas auction this year?
I am! It will be interesting. I have about 170 baseball lots ready for December 13...then the following week a large group of "modern" 52's (guys that debuted after 1952 in the classic format)...then, in January, I plan to list the whole 1982-1983 40th Anniversary Basketball set. It won't sell well--I'll be lucky to get my investment in the negatives back--but it's going to be super-cool. And the Bullets carnage won't be limited to just the '82-'83 campaign!!!
1957 should see some Bullett-carnage

Even Wes's FACE is funny!

Awesome cards, Wilkins and McAdoo were beasts! Let me know if you need any help with the Christmas auction, I might bid on a few cards myself.
Will do!! I think there is only 1 Joe Louis this year. It's a "Ring King"...
I loved McAdoo, BTW. Not sure why. He was just cool.

Sounds good to me, I'll be ready to fight for the Joe Louis. Just let me know when you're ready to go on the auctions. 🖒
This one looks like an old SNL sketch, Lol. The face is priceless.

At least none of those Bullets are suffering this indignity...
HAHAHAHAHA!!! That's hysterical!!!

That might be the ultimate cake-taker. I cannot beat that one...

LoL. These remind me of the 1987 Gigantes De La NBA sticker set that were distributed as magazine inserts in/around Spain. They had a sticker album if you wanted to collect the set that way.
Here are a couple graded MJ’s from the set, this first one is the only one I currently still own.

since this is a Bullets thread, check out this poster of Jeff Ruland
dude busted thru a wall and now it looks like a weird 80s-style porn clip is about to commence

Earl the Peral Monroe versus Walt Clyde Frazier
Soooo many really bad photos from that era!!

This is an awesome thread have you produced these cards I would be interested in buying two of each you have produced. Do tell do tell these are AWESOME> Barry Wilson here
They'll be pretty cheap on eBay, Lol. This set is being assembled strictly because Basketball cards in the 80's absolutely SUCKED or didn't exist--oddly during arguably the best era the sport ever knew. The growth was unprecedented and only a handful of players were represented well--if at all. It looks like the set will have 5 cards per team and there will be a "traded/update" series of about 30 cards featuring top rookies (Jerry Eaves would be considered as such, Lol) so its approximately 160 cards.

Here is the ugliest card in the set and, perhaps, the ugliest card ever made by Banty Red. Everything is gross. The face, pose, shorts, the random feet in the corner...the official with the terrible perm...this whole thing is so terrible, it should sell for a premium!!!

Dawkins got the worst of this deal Sixers win the title and he's stuck in Jersey with Jerome Whitehead...bad year for him.
"...not that there's anything wrong with that."

Great cards. I remember when the NBA got little respect. The Finals were on tape delay shown late at night.

Ralph
Thank you!!!!
Truth be told, I LOVED the 10:30 games from Los Angeles on Friday nights and tape-delayed finals. It was like Christmas for me!

I remember the Sports anchor saying "I will show you the score in ten seconds. If you don't want to know who won turn away."

Isn't that cool?
I hear people (usually under 50) say things like "nah, it's better now. You're just old and grouchy." Lol
I actually liked it WAY more before it changed.
I got in trouble for calling "sportsphone" 4-5 times every night the Lakers played to get the score! Lol. I was like a junkie!

I couldn't resist doing a "Jordan" thing with the Orlando Woolridge. He was my favoritein the pre-Jordan era. I went to so many Bulls games back then. I saw the Temptations after a game at The Stadium!
BTW...Woolridge's victim??? Washington. Lol
"You've gotta be a man to play this game...but you'd better have a lot of little boy in you, too"--Roy Campanella
@BuckHunter68 i was a big pre-Jordan Bulls fan myself. love this Woolridge card (with Jawann Oldham trailing him)
is Quintin Dailey in the anniversary set by chance?
you'll never be able to outrun a bad diet
>
You bet your horns he's in there! Lol Technically, he's in the 26-card "update" series that includes a handful of promising rookies! Clark Kellogg, Eric Floyd, Trent Tucker, Dominique Wilkins, John Bagley, Rod Higgins, James Worthy and about a dozen others...There are about a dozen guys that have 2 cards with different teams that appear in the "update" as well.
Bernard King, Artis Gilmore and, most notably, Moses Malone appears in the regular set with Houston (as it would have happened) and with Philadelphia in the "Update" set. Here's the late "Q"...

i love it! methinks i'm gonna have to place myself a bid or three when those launch
by the way, lookie who is behind Dailey in that shot 😂😂😂😂😂

Hahahahaha!!! Sir Jeffery is everywhere! He's also in the set! Lol

Here's the "base card" checklist for the set...it debuted yesterday with about 70 cards listed...another 70 to come in the next few weeks. Most of my following is pre-1960 baseball, so these will sell (if they sell at all) pretty cheap for now.
If anyone has thoughts on "traded" additions or "rookie" let me know!
John Bagley, Terry Cummings, Quintin Dailey, Jerry Eaves, Eric Floyd, Rod Higgins, Mark Iavaroni, Clark Kellogg, Fat Lever, Trent Tucker, Dominique Wilkins, Orlando Woolridge and James Worthy are the rookies I included. I have also posted a pic of the set's main attraction...Mr. Jeff Ruland who, along with Rick Mahorn, appears on like 30 cards in one way or another

When I was a kid (No cable channels and internet), I would listen to the radio station that gave sports scores at 20 and 50 after the hour. Then get up the next day and look at the box scores.
.....
I'm 45, and I liked things better before. Information overload is terrible. I was able to make it through childhood and young adulthood before there was so much change, and I truly appreciate many, many things that are gone.
Thank you for that insight!
And it continues. The list of things that have turned to garbage is unreal. The good part is, I can tell when things are great now and enjoy them before they will inevitably change for the worse. I always pay more to small businesses, etc. I drive an hour to visit my favorite memorabilia shop and spend my collecting money there to help ensure they stick around. The actual motivation for turning my artwork away from larger scale and into cards is to bring back some collectability and a link to what I truly enjoyed as a kid. I acknowledge it's odd, but I value the way things "were" to the point I try to re-create it.

For the record, the fun we are having with the photos is what I like the most about the hobby. The Jeff Ruland thing kills me, Lol.
