Question for IKE Dollar collectors

ajaanajaan Posts: 17,463 ✭✭✭✭✭

Researching 1972 P IKE dollars I see there are three types. What I read is type 3 coins have the islands extending to the west and east of the Florida peninsula. Are either of these type 3? TIA

and are they really collectible?

Both of your photos show the Type 3 reverse.

They are "collectible", in the sense that people collect a 1972 Type 3 coin to complete their Ike dollar collection. However, they are common and do not command a significant premium (except in high grade).

The 1972 Type 2 is the hard to find variety for that date, and does sell for a premium.

Interesting, I didn't know this but then I don't know too much about Ike silver dollars. I have three of them that I saved from my change when they were new. One was a 71 and the other two were 72 Type 3's as it turns out.

Fun the things one learns on this site.

Ike’s are an interesting coin. Since I only collect silver coins I have only the silver Ike’s, which occurred only from 71 to 75/76. There are two types of silver Ike’s, uncirculated (blue Ike’s) and proof (brown Ike’s). The nick-name is because the proof Ike’s came in big brown boxes and cost 10 dollars - (fairly expensive for the 70’s), and the uncirculated silver Ike’s came in small blue boxes for 3 dollars. But the super cool thing was that it didn’t take long to discover the blue Ike’s were not handled individually like the proofs and had bag marks - so it is hard to find a blemish-free blue Ike. The ideal set is to have all five (71, 72, 73, 74 and bicentennial 75/76) in MS68 or greater - as some do not grade any higher than 68. The surface luster in those large fields is super cool on the blue Ike’s - and in fact I sold all my proofs because although cameo effect I just like the UNC strike better. Love the big cartwheels these coins have when high grade!
This is one of my favorite modern silver dollar collections. Also Ike was a great American patriot!

Thanks. I haven't found any type
    2 coins.
