Anyone out there know who David Hall is?

David Hall has a set of Wilson Weiners out on the Registry. I have been told that he might have been an ex-PSA grader, however that is just a rumor. I need to see if he is interested in doing some horse trading. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

  • David Hall was the driving force in the founding of PCGS - Professional Coin Grading Service - in the mid eighties. That venture became wildly successful and spawned PSA and eventually expanded to Collector's Universe. Mr. Hall can afford to collect whatever pleases him. He can often be seen roaming the floors of major coin and card shows wearing his trademark Hawaiian shirt.

Well I knew that he must be an advanced collector, however if anyone knows him personally I would love to speak with him. Thanks for the information.

    Shane:

He sold off his collection via Superior Sportscards in the 1995 timeframe.

Though he had an absolutely amazing collection, with many supremely nice examples of vintage cards, it is also a common consensus among most advanced collectors that many of the cards in his collection are overgraded. I would say that with his 1955 Bowman set, about 30 - 40% of cards from his set are overgraded by about one full grade. There are some that are borderline, and some that are fair -- but overall, he got very favorable grades from PSA when he graded out and sold his cards at auction. Additionally, the same collectors often factor in a "discount" because of this. For a good example, check out prices realized of most of the Bowman PSA 10's that Superior auctioned off in March.

He used to be the CEO of Collectors Universe, but I do not think he is any longer. I haven't heard about his presence at any baseball cards shows in quite a while.

David Hall is still listed as President of Collectors Universe on the web site.

And if I remember correctly - the Wilson Weiner cards were sold by Superior in the 95 Auction that mikeschmidt mentioned. I see that he's only on the All -Time Finest and no longer on the "Current Finest".

So Shane - guess that makes you the "top dog".image

  • If I remember correctly, most of his cards that went in those auctions in the mid-1990's had "David Hall Collection" printed on the PSA label, much to the dismay of those who purchased them who are now trying to sell them.

I have at least 300 cards from him and not one has the David Hall Collection written on it.
I am surpised that someone who collects what is arguably one of the toughest if not the toughest baseball set there is post-war has not heard of David Hall--one of the legendary figures in the hobby!!!!!

    Shane:

You ought to find out who got Copeland's set. I imagine that that is where at least one of the Ted Williams PSA 8 cards came from. His set was probably the best one ever to exist -- easily and far exceeding that of David Hall.

  • Davalillo - My mistake, I should have said some not most. I have 3 that do, maybe it was just on the older cards.

    Davillio,
As I said in the article above, someone told me that he use to be a grader at PSA. All I wanted to do is try to pick up a couple of the Wilson cards that I need to finish up. As a big collector yourself, you should have a couple of these lying around the house. Any chance of getting rid of those? I noticed you have about 96 sets registered under the PSA site, looks like you have the best collection in the country. I have never seen anything like it Davillo. I am also trying to finish the Dan Dee set like yourself, if you run into any other Dan Dees that you don't need let me know.

    Thanks,

    1954,

Sorry, I did not attempt to collect these ungraded so I do not have any extras from these two very tough sets hanging around.
Best collection????That is subjective. It may be the broadest in that it encompasses all major sports and goes from 1887 to 1991 but in terms of most valuable, there is no question that Charlie Merkel, Don Louchios and Marshall Fogel have more valuable collections and perhaps John Branca as well(and maybe others I do not know of).

I have the old Superior auctions catalogs that sold the David Hall cards and none of the cards had special labels. Perhaps they were subsequently labelled to emphasize their pedigree.
