Actually, these old mounts usually are removed, hopefully by people who know what they are doing. Significantly devalues the coin, but makes them affordable to those who just want to follow the numismatic history. Of course, when I can, I get the highest quality that I can afford. Even those, however, have issues. At least here I can imagine some fancy fop wearing the coin in homage to his liege.
