Seems a few other 8 reales went for a steal as well today a 1771 and that 1732 cob both from Mexico.

While I don't know the FMV of the coin, I agree it seemed cheap. This is one of the pitfalls of a unreserved, true auction. And it shows how dealers can make money in auctions, ebay or otherwise, provided they can move the material.

They were BINs. This user ID has dribbled out solid mid-level Spanish pieces over the last year-plus... generally at non-insane levels where most/all sell eventually, or even quickly. Many of the pieces seem to come from Heritage, Stack's or other usual spots - as he has stated, he's a collector selling off some pieces.

1732 cob - offer accepted off $640 ask... solid coin, nothing stupendous, and a lot of rather decent pieces of this date out there (plenty of Vliegenthart which are virtually or actually nice enough to straight grade, but also non-salvage)... probably a fair price, even in this insane market.

Ah, to be able to time warp back to Nov. 2014... smart move to auction 88 pcs. of the same date all at once (see the following lots):

The 1782 and 1803 8R aren't particularly nice coins. The 1803... eh, I frankly see an AU "slider" coin. The 1782 is close enough to AU58, but the planchet problems on the reverse are a bit distracting. If there's actual luster present, it could overshadow that, but not sure it's there from those pics.

HOWEVER... they got in holders with those grades, so they could have brought more $$ right now.

The 1734, though, was unquestionably underpriced. Also note that it sold the quickest!!

EDIT: Forgot that 1771... solid coin, definitely cheap right now also.

I cannot believe an XF45 common date pillar is now an $1100 coin (though one could argue the following coin is that 1771 AU53's equal)

    Great input!!

Wish I saw the 1734 before it was gone.

1782 was a good buy based on the NGC scans that show quite a bit of luster. 1811-HJ draped bust is a scarce coin, and could be $600+ in AU, but not looking like that, IMO.
