AU55 is my most optimistic opinion... likely 50 to 53. Nice coin. Perfect example to illustrate that not all Buffalo nickels are created equal. Some are just struck so poorly and do not have a full horn.

I suspect this thread will not be without some controversy over the grade

Being one of the most least available "D" Mint coins and with the known smooth forehead on the Bison for that year, I think that this example Grades higher than most people think and I will go with MS61/62 range. nice coin not many seen in that condition anymore.

With the very weak strike, the grade will depend a lot on the remaining luster which is impossible to evaluate from those pics. I'll guess AU 55 but it wouldn't surprise if it got an MS grade.

AU55 is my guess. (changed to AU50)

If I were to grade strictly on the horn, I'd have to go with a FINE, yet that would do the coin an injustice.
With that stated, IF it isn't weakly struck (and some indications prove it is not while a couple of others prove it might be), I'd go with XF.

I still look for wear on the hip of the buffalo. I can't see it well enough to tell in the photo. So it's an AU or low end MS. The buffalo shoulder and head are strike issues from what I remember of the date/mm.

XF 45 was my first impression and that’s what I’ll go with

Because of the weakly struck 24 Buffs, I believe as does another, this to be an uncirculated coin, perhaps as high as MS63. I just do not see wear on the obverse to any degree. Then, this is just my gtg.

My 1924-S is OGH VF-20 with a full to the tip horn. This one is typical of 1924-D in that most, if not all of them have incomplete bottom feathers.

By that old standard this would be a F-15 coin, but I'm gonna say XF-40

Wow. They were harsh. It would be interesting to see how PCGS would grade it.

Wow, unbelieveably harsh grade. Here is the 24d I had in my registry set before I sold them and I would have traded it, gladly, for this one at that time.

Well, when I said it would have graded F-15 by the old standards, I didn't think it would go for that today.

Exhibit A as to what is wrong with Grading.. Grading Standards and the apparent ZERO appreciation or knowledge in connection with the variation in quality by Mints in the Buffalo series... If I really cared what ANACS thought, I would be embarrassed for them.

I would have to give this anacs graded 24d buffalo nickel an xf45 or au50. Looking at the pcgs 30 shown above
which belonged to jesbroken, I would not give this a vf30. Still a nice buff in its own right though. I have seen coins this nice given a fine-15 by most all known grading services. I have a nice 1913 type one three and one half legged buffalo that is a nice strong xf-45 that anacs gave only a vf-30 to. Almost sent it back and complained but decided not to do it at the last minute.

Moving from one thing to another,I picked Buffalos as my new series. Had no idea what I was getting into. Very complex series with volumes of info to be learned. 🤨
