A couple 1906 Proofs from same set?

Eldorado9Eldorado9 Posts: 2,416 ✭✭✭✭✭

These two must have been separated at some point long ago. The quarter is in a PCGS 68+ holder and resides in the Hansen collection, and the half is PCGS 68, and was previously in the Simpson collection. I think they originated together as a proof set? What do you guys think?

Both nice coins, unlikely they were in the same set. Anything is possible thou.

I thought that 1) The similar extremely high state of preservation (both are 68's) and 2) the identical color palette, that they HAD to be stored together for a very long time in identical packaging, like a paper envelopes of some kind....Thus, I figured for sure they were from a mint issued proof set.

You have other coins that look like twins that are different years. I think many types of coins tend to tone similarly. Kind of like Peace dollars usually have ugly toning.

I agree that there is a strong possibility those coins were once part of the same set. Can their sales history be traced ... with photos?

Possibly...I'm going to do a bit of detective work. The quarter is a coin I owned back in the late 90's, and at the time was a PCGS PF-67. It's since upgraded to 68+....I knew that coin was good. Should of kept it. I'm of the opinion that these two coins HAVE to be from the same original proof set. They are both residing in the DL collection at the moment.

sure, they could be from the same original set, but it's highly more likely that they are random coins and just toned similarly.

The toned area around "ICA" of AMERICA on both the coins is so similar

While possible, it is more than likely they were just stored in the same type of container(envelope or box) from day 1 with same type of atmosphere(moisture and/or temperature). Just an opinion.

If not, still would be nice to own them together. Wonder if a similar dime is out there?
