What is the background for the Europinos?

It seems that the Hamburg Mint struck Europinos in 5 and 2.5 denominations in 1952.

Does anyone have more background on these? Who ordered them and how were they sold or distributed?

Here's one that was recently seen.

I owned a 2.5 Europinos from 1952 that had Dwight Eisenhower on it - I sold it on eBay for quite a bit more than I paid for it.

My understanding is that New York coin dealer Hans Schulman was responsible for them.
