CAC opinion on DMPL Morgans

scubafuelscubafuel Posts: 1,901 ✭✭✭✭✭

Apologies in advance for yet another CAC thread.

Can someone remind me whether CAC examines the "DMPL" designation stated on PCGS holders when evaluating for a green sticker? If so, are their criteria the same as PCGS? What has been your opinion of their accuracy?

Thanks!

Yes, CAC makes their decisions in consideration of designations, such as DMPL, FB, FBL, etc. I’ve seen very few CAC DMPL’s that I thought were only marginal. Others might have had different experiences.

Hi, here are two examples of coins that I sent to CAC and received green stickers for them. Hopefully this helps.

CAC's standards for PL and DMPL are below what most serious PL and DMPL collectors would consider to be PL and DMPL.

I disregard CAC stickers on PL's and DMPL's, to be candid.

Its my understanding that the only designation CAC ignores is the + and *. Here is one PL I have with the bean, I personally think the PL designation it fitting.

CAC is not accepting coins from non-members at the moment - and they have closed the membership too.

Now you've done it. There'll be people scouring the internet for the next few days at least, looking for examples to disprove your experience, you know.

I should add that my standards for PL/DMPL are fairly rigorous.

What are your definitions for PL and DMPL?

    PCGS uses the following:

    • PCGS defines surface Prooflike as clear reflection in the fields on both sides as viewed from two to four inches away. A misty effect or striations may impede the reflectivity.
    • The PCGS definition for Deep Mirror Prooflike is clear reflection in the fields on both sides from at least six inches away. There must be full, undistorted reflectivity on both the obverse and reverse.

I agree with the PCGS definition as it is applied at present times. It hasn't always been applied so consistently though.

The membership opens and closes. You just need to be on the waiting list.

I had some of my prooflike set sent to CAC in their early days and got quite a few stickered, still have one or two DMPLs from that.

I look for DMPL Morgan’s with the CAC stickers. The CAC sticker is for the whole coin,

Yes. CAC review considers all grade modifiers except for the plus and star designations. This includes PL, DMPL/DPL, CAM, DCAM/UCAM, copper color designations, and strike designations.

My personal experience is that CAC is a little loose on PL/DMPL designations, but I doubt the forum and the market care what I think.
