OBJ's father goes after Baker Mayfield

Odell Beckham Jr's father ripped into Baker Mayfield by posting a video on Instagram blaming Baker Mayfield for his son's lack of production.

Odell Beckham Sr. posts video putting blame for his son’s lack of production on Baker Mayfield

Odell Beckham Sr. appears to be sending a message that Odell Beckham Jr. wants out of Cleveland before today’s NFL trade deadline.

Beckham Sr. posted a video on Instagram that blamed his son’s lack of production in Cleveland on Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield, showing highlights of plays on which Beckham got open and Mayfield failed to deliver the ball to him.

The words, “Every missed opportunity Odell was open” appeared on the screen before the collection of Mayfield lowlights. In the comments on his video, Beckham Sr. agreed with a fan who said that Mayfield just doesn’t want to get Beckham Jr. the ball.

That Beckham Sr. would post the video less than 24 hours before the NFL trade deadline strongly suggests that the family believes Beckham Jr. would be better off elsewhere. And it wouldn’t be the first time; Beckham Sr. took some social media shots at Giants owner John Mara in the months before the Giants traded Beckham Jr. to the Browns.

Beckham Jr. may claim he has no involvement in his dad’s social media activities, but it seems highly unlikely that the father (who was a running back at LSU from 1989 to 1992) would post such a criticism of Mayfield if the son didn’t agree with it. There haven’t been any reports that Beckham is close to getting traded, but perhaps his father is hoping that a Hail Mary pass on Instagram can change that.

I am not a fan of Beckham. Very talented I know.

Edited to add: I would be interested in hearing from Browns fans , or others, about whether he hurts more than helps the team.

I have watched the video on Instagram and it's about 12 minutes long and has background music of the REM song "Everybody hurts" and it shows every play that Baker Mayfield could have thrown the ball to OBJ. Here is the link to the video.

I watched some of the video. The fact that the video exists is an example of why I wouldn't want him on my team and is possibly the elephant in the room that neither Beckham nor his father can see.

Yes sir, I still remember when OBJ caught a beatdown from the kickers net, that net had a vicious left hook!

Mayfield has missed Odell a bunch of times in the few snippets of games I have seen. It is why he is a mediocre QB. Doesn't mean Mayfield can't get them to the playoffs and win some games but he is more hype than production.

Agreed, though I'm not a fan of Beckham, either. A lot of wasted talent there, which may be even worse.

OBJ is a exciting playmaker at times, he will make one handed great catches but he is not a steady production WR in Cleveland, Mayfield might be to blame but hasn’t he been injured and barely seeing the field enough to get into a rhythm with Baker?

Saw Sr. Run Marshall Texas into two Texas high school title games. Amazing how friggin old I am. OBJ will be somewhere else but only if the Browns cut him. There are a ton of teams that would line up without the salary involved.

Loved the Beckham trade when it happened but injuries have really hurt him. Baker hasn't been on the same page with him mainly because of that. Beckham can and will make some ridiculous catches and then miss/drop the easiest. No consistency from him and this offense may just not fit him. The browns throw a lot of shorter underneath passes, that's not Bickham's specialty.

Just more distractions he has brought with him to the Browns. It sure seems he's more of a "Look at Me" person than a "Team Player" .

you can't get an accurate assessment of either player by watching a "a few snippets" of them playing, that's what created the entire controversy with OB Sr. and his video. if he would have included the passes his child has dropped, passes where OBJ is targeted at critical times in games, the reaction would be different.

to that end, Mayfield is always criticized for errant throws while fans conveniently overlook the easy catches which his targets drop. most are loathe to admit it, but both of these players, Baker Mayfield and OBJ, are pretty disliked by fans for whatever reason. that tends to cloud any sense of objective judgement because people will tend to see the things which bolster their point.

    watch entire games, not highlights.

If OBJ had nothing to do with his father's video he should be embarrassed that Daddy put this out there. I look at OBJ as someone who had a couple great years and really isn't worth the distraction or the large hit to the salary cap. He is not the elite receiver he once may have been. As far as Mayfield, I think he is a good not elite QB and a team can certainly win with him. He was considered an accurate passer coming into the league and certainly can throw downfield if necessary. I'm not sure if there is a chemistry issue between Mayfield and OBJ but if there is, cut your losses and move on. The Browns proved last season they are just fine without OBJ.
